Market Research – Questionnaire Results
This market research task was to carry out music questionnaires within the college to try
and work out what the target audience would be if a music magazine for the college was to
be designed. By gathering opinions of students from the college, I will be able to create a
successful magazine that people are interested in reading.

                                Favourite Genre

                                                                     Soul/Reggae
                                                                     Dance & Electronica
                                                                     Hip Hop/RnB
                                                                     Pop/Chart music
                                                                     Indie
                                                                     Classical
                                                                     Other

The results from my questionnaire showed that the most popular genre of music between
people aged 16-25 years was hip hop/RnB.

However, the results of preferred genre could have been different based on where the
majority of the vote came from. For example, 70% of the people who took part in my

questionnaire were female, meaning only 30% were male. If the majority of the answers
were from a male, it is more likely that one of the preferred genres would have been rock
music.

                                    Age Range

                                                                              0-6 years
                                                                              7-10 years
                                                                              11-15 years
                                                                              16-25 years
                                                                              26-40 years
                                                                              41+ years

The majority of people that filled in this questionnaire were between 16 and 25 years old.
This could be due to the environment my questionnaire was given out i.e. in college. This
has helped me to determine who to aim my magazine at and what genres to cover. Also, the
most popular age range will help me to decide how to design my magazine and the house
style e.g. whether it will be formal/informal.

How often do you buy music magazines?

                                                                     Once a week
                                                                     Once a fortnight
                                                                     Once a month
                                                                     I have a subscription
                                                                     Never

The results of this question showed that music consumption is rarely done through
purchasing magazines. This is because most consumers use Web 2.0 technology e.g.
YouTube and Facebook, to listen to and get information on artists. Web 2.0 technology has
become increasingly popular since the release of YouTube in 2004. The results of this
question made me come to a decision that if I was to publish my magazine, it would be
released once a month but digital copies would also be available.

How much would you want to spend on a
                      music magazine?

                                                                             £0 - £1.99
                                                                             £2 - £3.49
                                                                             £3.50 - £5.99
                                                                             £6 - £9.99
                                                                             £10+

The results of this question show that the average price that a person is willing to pay for a
music magazine is between £2 - £3.49. This links into the question before on the popularity
of music magazines. As not many people buy magazines any more, people are not willing to
pay a high price for them because the information they would find in the magazine is
available at a much lower cost if not for free on the internet.

Would you be more likely to buy a music
magazine if it came with a free gift?

                                                                                 Yes
                                                                                 No
                                                                                 Maybe

The results from this question show that 80% of people asked would be more likely to buy a
magazine if there was a free gift included. This is clearly a selling point of a magazine and
attracts a reader to buying a certain magazine. To increase the consumption of music
magazines, it would be a good idea to add a free gift to persuade people to buy them.

The results gathered from this questionnaire haven’t affected the design of my magazine as
the results were from people who prefer hip hop/RnB music and my magazine will be based
on pop music. However, the selling points of my magazine have been affected such as
including a free gift and how often the magazine would be published if it was to be sold in
shops.
