Malaysian music developed from a mixture of Indian, Chinese, Thai and Indonesian influences and is largely based on percussion instruments. It originated in the Kelantan-Pattani region and includes vocal, dance and theatrical forms that emerged during the pre-colonial period and still exist today. During the post-Portuguese period in the 16th century, Malaysian music further developed and contains elements from local music as well as influences from Arabian, Persian, Indian, Chinese and Western sources.
