Architect : Thomas Lesser
Name of Project : Museum of the Moving Image
Location : Astoria, New York
Status : Built
Cost : $70 million
Size : 97,700 sq. ft
Construction period : February 2008 - January 2011
3. Founded in 1981, The museum completed a major expansion and
renovation, reopening its doors on January 15, 2011.
Designed by architect Thomas Lesser, the project doubles the size of the
building. It includes a complete redesign of the first floor and a new
theater, screening room, galleries and an education center.
Museum of the moving image is the nation’s only museum devoted to film,
television and digital media. The core exhibition, behind the screen, spans
two floors and 15,000 square feet. and utilizes more than 1,400 historical
artifacts, commissioned artworks, video clips and interactive exhibits to show
how moving images are made, marketed and shown.
The museum hosts regular monthly series in its two premium theaters.
These ongoing series include “Changing the Picture,” “Fist & Sword,” “New
Adventures in Nonfiction,” “Science on Screen,” and “Disreputable Cinema.”
Each of these explore and celebrate many aspects of the art and culture
of cinema.
It is also home to one of the most significant collections of video

21. Educational Spaces
Upon reaching the first level, the grand stair widens into a
1,700 square-foot video screening amphitheater.
The integration of ramp and stair allows for the
amphitheater to be an interactive educational stage.
To accommodate more students the Digital Learning Suite
houses mobile computer workstations. The space is divided
with custom designed curtains to allow for flexible space use.
This flexible space can accommodate up to 240 guests for a
seated dinner. The room can be configured into two separate
classrooms, each with its own projection facility.

While moving upstairs there we find some educational spaces and exhibition

22. The william fox amphitheater can
accommodate 54 guests and features an
LCD monitor capable of displaying custom
content. When used in conjunction with the
digital learning suite, the space—which has
a separate entrance—can also be used for
the display of video materials.

30. FRONT SPEAKERS
IF THERE ARE 5 FRONT SPEAKERS, LEFT EXTRA SHOULD BE PLACED MIDWAY BETWEEN CENTRE
AND LEFT SPEAKER, AND CORRESPONDINGLY WITH RIGHT EXTRA AND RIGHT SPEAKERS, AT
THE SAME HEIGHT AS THE OTHER FRONT SPEAKERS.
THE CABINET SHOULD BE PLACED CLOSE TO THE PICTURE’S VERTICAL CENTRE LINE, BUT NOT
ON THE AUDITORIUM CENTRE LINE, TO AVOID ACOUSTICAL PROBLEMS.
USUALLY THE SUBWOOFERS ARE PLACED SLIGHTLY OFF-CENTRE, BELOW THE CENTRE
SPEAKER. SUBWOOFERS MAY ALSO BE PLACED BELOW THE SCREEN FRAME.
SUBWOOFERS
31. •THE DISTANCE FROM THE LEFT OR RIGHT CORNER TO THE FIRST SPEAKER SHOULD BE IN THE
RANGE OF 0.9-1.2m.
•THE SPEAKERS SHOULD BE EVENLY DISTRIBUTED ON THE WALL WITH A DISTANCE BETWEEN
EACH OF THEM (C-C) IN THE RANGE OF 1.0–2.5m (MAXIMUM 3m). SMALLER SPACING WILL
PROVIDE BETTER DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOUND, ESPECIALLY IF THE LAST ROW IS CLOSE TO
THE REAR WALL.
•ALL REAR SURROUND SPEAKERS MUST BE MOUNTED AT THE SAME HEIGHT AND OFFER A
GOOD COVERAGE OF THE AUDITORIUM. IF THE CEILING HEIGHT ALLOWS FOR IT, THE
SPEAKERS SHOULD BE MOUNTED AT A HEIGHT OF 2.5-3M ABOVE THE FLOOR. IF NOT, THEY
SHOULD BE MOUNTED RIGHT BELOW THE CEILING.
REAR SURROUND SPEAKERS
32. •SPEAKERS SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE SIDE WALLS
•THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE SPEAKERS SHOULD BE BETWEEN 1.0 AND 2.5 (MAX. 3) METERS
•WHEN PLACING THE SIDE SURROUND SPEAKERS, USE A SIMILAR SPACING AS THE ONE USED
FOR THE REAR SPEAKERS.
•IF THE SPACING COMES OUT DIFFERENT THAN THE REAR WALL, THE SPACING SHOULD BE
SLIGHTLY SMALLER FOR THE REAR SPEAKERS.
SIDE SURROUND SPEAKERS
33. MOUNTING SURROUND SPEAKERS
USUALLY THEY ARE MOUNTED ON BRACKETS WHERE THEY CAN BE TILTED IN THE DESIRED
DIRECTION.
TO MOUNT THE SURROUND SPEAKERS ON THE WALL, MAKE SURE THAT THE WALL CAN
SAFELY CARRY THE WEIGHT OF THE BRACKET WITH THE SPEAKER. IT IS OFTEN NECESSARY TO
STRENGTHEN THE WALLS WITH STUDDING (FOR EXAMPLE PLYWOOD).
SMALL SPEAKERS WEIGH UP TO 10kg, WHILE LARGE ONES CAN WEIGH AS MUCH AS 30 kg OR
MORE. CONFIRM THE WEIGHT AND MOUNTING SYSTEM WITH THE SOUND INSTALLER OR
TAKE ACCOUNT FOR MORE HEAVY SPEAKERS.
34. ANGLED SIDE WALLS
IN MANY AUDITORIUMS, THE SIDE WALLS ARE NOT PARALLEL. IF THE
WALLS ARE ONLY SLIGHTLY ANGLED, THIS WILL BE GOOD FOR
ACOUSTICS AND STILL ALLOW FOR A LARGE PICTURE SIZE.
35. Projector mounted above the ceiling in the corridor behind the auditorium
