This study investigated the effects of depression and stress on cognitive functioning. The hypothesis was that individuals suffering from depression would have more impaired cognitive function than non-depressed individuals due to the effects of stress from depression. Participants completed cognitive tests and MRIs to examine brain activity and hippocampal volume. Results showed depressed individuals had worse memory and differences in brain activity compared to healthy participants, supporting the hypothesis that depression is associated with cognitive impairments from stress and changes in brain structure.
