2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Chapter #1:
What Surprised Me Most
This topic is new for me and I see that it is new on the world also, but the most surprised
me most was that is necessary to capacitate teachers on the world to work with this kinds of
students who need linguistic, cognitive, academic, and affective development. Nevertheless
only 2.5 % have degree bilingual and a little bit or not training in differential learning and
development needs in this CLD kids.
What I Agree With
From my points of view I agree with “Educator are responsible for educating all
students” that guidelines is very important because the CLD students come from to ours
classroom and schools with 3 essential characteristics: Multilingualism, Experiences and
schooling in another country and familiarity with multiple cultures and ethnicities.
Chapter #2:
What Encouraged Me
It was to know exactly what happen with several students in our classroom with “fragile
understanding” its concept and way to ensure that it is not happen among to the methods robust
to understanding such as: frequently check students ´s prior understanding, regularly prompt
students to think about exist understanding in novel ways and encourage students to derive new
between existing schemata and new contexts.
What I Want to Know More About
I consider that I have to learn more about CLD and cognitive dimension of these students to
help with lagoons in the learning, reinforcing at the same time searching potential. To
emphasize dialogue didactic and creating one structure of class allow be flexible and handable
for all learners.

individual progress through in his/her learning first language each one of us in acquiring of first
language complete complex process and transition that beginning with the oral languages. That
´s why I see why students speaks in spanish sometimes and others in english when they are
improving.
