Water is essential for life and comes from various sources like rain, rivers, oceans, canals, dams, wells, and tanks. Rain is the main source of fresh water for agriculture. Canals, wells, and tanks help supply water for irrigation when rainfall is inconsistent. Dams are built across rivers to store water and provide irrigation, electricity, and flood control. It is important to conserve our water resources through practices like rainwater harvesting and not polluting water bodies.

- 4. RAIN Rain is the main source of fresh water. Farmers mostly depend on the monsoon for irrigation. As rainfall is not distributed throughout the country so we need sufficient and reliable supply of water throughout the year for growing crops.
- 5. CANALS Canals are the channels that are dug to draw water from rivers to the fields. India has a very good network of canals. Examples: Indira Gandhi canal Sirhind canal Agra canal
- 6. In villages, people dig wells to draw the underground water to the surface. When the underground water is very deep, holes are bored with the help of drilling machines. Water is brought up with the help of an electric pump called tube wells. Tube wells are widely used in Punjab, Haryana, UP and Gujrat for irrigation. WELLS AND TUBE WELLS
- 7. In the Southern Plateau, it is difficult to dig the ground because the land surface has hard rocks. Therefore, people collect water in tanks and ponds during rainy seasons. The collected water is used for irrigation purpose. Tanks are commonly used in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. TANKS
- 8. DAMS Dams are strong walls built across a river to hold back the flow of water. Dams are used for producing electricity. Dams help to control floods. Dams also help in fish breeding. Dams are an ideal place for fishing.
- 9. Reservoir is an artificial lake. It is formed behind the dam. Canals take this water to the fields for irrigation. RESERVOIR
- 10. WHY DO WE NEED TO CONSERVE WATER? Water is very important for our existence. So, it is our duty not to pollute water bodies but to conserve water.
- 11. WAYS TO CONSERVE WATER We should not throw garbage and harmful substances into water bodies. We should not wash clothes or bathe animals in rivers. Close the taps properly after use. Reuse kitchen water to water plants in your garden. Conserve water through rainwater harvesting and other conservation techniques.
