Multi-location testing identifies high oil
yielding groundnut lines
Background
Over 60% of global groundnut produce is used for extraction of oil. Groundnut
oil is the preferred cooking medium in several countries including China, India,
Nigeria, Myanmar, Senegal, Niger and Indonesia. Cultivated groundnut varieties
contain about 48% oil in the kernel; increasing kernel oil content can enhance
milling efficiency and ensure profitability of groundnut cultivation.

Robust phenotyping by Near Infrared Reflectance
Spectroscopy (NIRS)
Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is a robust, cost-effective and
non-destructive method of estimating oil, protein, fatty acids and other organic
constituents. NIRS is utilized at ICRISAT to estimate the oil, fatty acid and protein
content in groundnut. Different mathematical treatments were tested to identify
the best calibration equation based on their coefficient of determination in
calibration (R2
) and coefficient of determination in cross-validation (1-VR) values.
The calibration equation with an R2
of 0.83 is used for estimation of oil content in
whole groundnut kernels.

Farmer Participatory Varietal Selection (FPVS) trials
• Fifty-four FPVS trials were conducted in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil
Nadu between 2013 and 2015
• Lines ICGV 07222 and ICGV 07038 recorded 6–26% and 11–25% higher pod
yield respectively over GG 20/GJG 31 in Gujarat
• Lines ICGV 03128 and ICGV 07018 recorded 12–31% and 11–26% higher pod
yield respectively over Co 6 and Co 7 in Tamil Nadu
• In Andhra Pradesh, the lines were on par with local check Dharani
Summary
High oil yielding lines of groundnut were identified from national and
state trials. Pilot demonstrations are being conducted in Tamil Nadu,
Gujarat and Telangana to enable adoption of these lines among the
farming community.
• Under AICRP-G, ICGV 03043 identified for release in Zone V
• Under AICRP-G, ICGVs 03042, 06424 and 07222 promoted to AVT
• ICGV 06146 and ICGV 07222 promoted to adaptive trials in Tamil Nadu
• Pilot demonstrations are underway in about 60 ha in 2016-17 in the
states of Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
