Platform background
The Action Site is the Lake Victoria Basin
that was launched on the 1st Aug 2013.
This platform targets an area that is
described as a Peri-urban farming
system, with great potential for farmers
to access markets. The identified entry
themes are Banana, Vegetables, Poultry,
Agro forestry (fruit trees) and Piggery
Opportunities and constraints
Opportunities:
Some participating organizations have
been involved in Multi-stakeholder
Innovation Platforms before
A number of stakeholders are active and
optimistic
Stakeholders concurred that there was
need for platform to specifically interest
the youth into farming
Constraints:
 Funding of program activities has not
yet been streamlined, yet this is absolutely
necessary, especially, in the initial stages of
platform development

Conclusions and ways forward
Based on the selected enterprises , platform
performance is slowly but steadily growing.
The platform needs to be initially nurtured
technically and financially. There is need for a
strong initial base to enable the platform to
grow and eventually sustain itself
Platform progress
Platform initiated on 21 Jan 2014 and has
held 4 meetings to date.
Sample villages, target farmers and FRGs
have been identified in relation to the entry
themes.
Location specific situational studies have
been conducted.
Establishing trials has been initiated this
season
Platform facilitation and
learning
Some of the bottlenecks are the initial
low funding base of the program which
does not auger well, especially, with
private sector
Each of the meetings and activities
have personnel specifically assigned to
document
The platform is slowly finding a clear
bearing to enable it steer R&D and
policy agendas but there is need for
capacity building

Platform characteristics
A Multistakeholder R&D Platform, chaired
by Dr. Fred Mukulu
The stakeholder groups are made up of
men and women. Like many farmer groups in
Uganda, majority of members are women
Platform operates at inter-district level and
activities are led by elected members.
Selected leaders from R&D stakeholders are
still driving the process, as facilitators.
Facilitation is done by NARO, IITA and
Makerere University while funding, to a
certain extent, is done by participating
organizations. The program still plays an
important part in funding activities
