2. INTERPRET THE
BRIEF
Our client is Eighteen Productions and the audiences
age ranges between 16-25. The client is looking to
help artists to do freelance gigs in the North East.
Eighteenth Promotion is where they do freelance
videos for small artists. We were asked to do an
audio visual, audio and a digital print and that could
include a music video, podcast, album cover, or a
website design. The band I'm working with is called
Pretty Velvet. For the podcast I was in charge of
taking the videos. The first two members we met
were Tom and Leah who were really down to earth
people and then later on in the course we met the
rest of the band and got to know them better as
people. I feel like it was good to meet the band
because we got a good understanding of what the
band wanted for the final product of the video and
digital print.
3. PRETTY VELVET
Pretty Velvet are a five piece British modern rock
and roll band with the main singers Leah and
Daniel. The PV boys are Tommy, Ewan and
Adam. They have catchy riffs, a blue edges and
subtle dark-pop essence.
We did a podcast with the band and they told us
that their main inspo is Fleetwood mac and led
zeppelin. They like having things leopard print
and leather.
5. WHO YOU ARE
STEREOCUPID
During the client meeting, pretty velvet said
that they wanted their music video to be
similar to who are you by stereocupid. So, I
had to make sure that the background was
white and the music instruments where in the
similar place as their music video.
6. ALBUM COVERS
There are many different genres of music, like pop,
rock, alternative, indie and rock. They can feature
photographs, illustrations or graphic graphics. Colours,
typography and imagery covers are carefully chosen.
Album covers need the track list, artwork, title and a
distinctive fonts. Fonts can be distinctive by
using style, sizing, shapes to match the emotion of the
album. Gothic bands often use bold fonts for their
covers to create a dark and dramatic aesthetic that
matches their music style.
7. ALBUM COVERS PART 2
This is an album called demon days which features Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D. it
features the four virtual band members all following each other in a line. The
symbolize unity and friendship among the virtual band. It represents their collaborative
nature and the idea that they are in the journey together. I find the layout quite interesting
because it draws your eyes from one character to the next. Its like they're taking you on a
journey through their music. The combination of vibrant hues against the dark
background creates a contrast that catches the eye. The colours help convey the mood
and atmosphere of the music within the album.
8. MUSIC GENRES
The music genre we are looking into is alternative/rock/indie because that’s what RED
REMEDY and PRETTY VELVET genre of music is. The genre is diverse by its non-
mainstream nature. Lyrics can be socially conscious. Some bands that are within that
genre are the 1975, Radiohead, tame impala and Florence + the machine.
Music genres are different styles or categories of music that
have their own unique sound. Each genre has
their instruments, and rhythms.
Indie music is short for independent music which refers to a genre
that doesn’t associate with major record labels.
9. MUSIC VIDEOS
Music videos are important to musicians because it helps get the artists get more
recognition. OKGO is a good example of a good music video because the music itself is
rubbish but it's completely fine because they have a good music video. A lot of their videos
have lots to do with paint.
Another band that links more to indie, is a band called Lovejoy. In their newest
EP, 'NORMAL PEOPLE THINGS" it has the title first and credits to the director in
The beginning, then it has a close up shot of all of the members. It has Wilbur
Soot who is the main singer and he is lip syncing all of the lyrics whilst the
Other members (Ash, Joe and Mark) are stood still.
10. POSTERS
Posters are a big thing in the music industry because it helps
promotes small artists. They represent the artists band and help
create a connection with fans. They can be displayed in music
shops, concerts and online platforms.
Posters are good because
the target audience is 16-18
and a lot of people have
posters in their rooms (on
their wall). I like the David
Bowie poster because it has
his logo he wears on
his face. I like how it has
the price in bold
11. WHAT MAKES A GOOD
POSTER
For music, a good poster should represent the artists genre, convey the
mood of the music and draw people's attention. Fonts play a good role in
gothic bands often reflecting their dark and mysterious style. For indie,
posters should have unique artistic designs that reflect the alternative
nature of the posters. For fonts, the indie aesthetic has hand drawn or
vintage styled typography.
12. TYPOGRAPHY
Typography is the art and technique of arranging letters. It involves
selecting fonts, adjusting spacing, and organizing text to be more effective.
Typography plays a role in graphic designs, advertising and branding. I
think typography inn posters is incredibly important for creating a visual
impact. Different fonts, sizes, and styles can evoke emotions and set the
tone for the posters.
For my podcast cover photo, the font will be one of the main things you're
going to notice. I'm using the website dafont to download all of my fonts to
photoshop a
13. SHOWREEL
Showreels are important because they show artists skills, experience in an
engaging way. Typical, showreel. They give potential employers or clients a
look into your talent and can help you stand out in a creative industry like
marketing. Gothic bands like Evanescence have created showreel. Many
other bands have created showreels to showcase their music and
performances. Some other examples include Metallica, Foo fighters and
Coldplay. They are commonly used by actors, film makers, and animators
14. SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media is a good tool for small bands because it helps them
reach a wider audience and connect with fans directly. Its like
having your own stage to share your music, updates and interact
with fans all over the world. Plus, its an effective way to promote
your music and upcoming gigs.
16. MITSKI (AUDIO VISUAL)
Mitski's song NOBODY is an
exploration of loneliness and
desire for connection. The lyrics
convey the struggle of feeling
unseen and unheard and it helps
connect listeners who have been
through a similar emotion of
feeling like they're nobody. The
two Mitski's drinking the milkshake
she feels like it's not a horrible
thing to be lonely and that she
wants to spend more time alone.
In the music video, nobody has
faces and the reasoning being I
think it's because Mitski feels like
she can't connect with anyone, but
she wishes she could.
Some other good music videos by Mitski are,

17. VIPER QUEEN MUSIC VIDEO BEHIND
THE SCENES
I think behind the scenes are great for small bands
because it gives fans a peek into the creative
process and make music videos more personal
and relatable. It helps build a connection with fans
and creates a sense of authenticity. Plus, it’s a fun
way to showcase the hard work that goes into
making a music video
18. AUDIO PODCAST
An audio podcast is like a radio show that you can listen to on demand.
Its like having an interesting conversation or stories in audio form that you
can listen to whenever you want.
In the music industry, some examples of audio podcasts are SONG
EXPLODER where artists breakdown their songs and DISSECT which
analyse albums in depth.
Another example of a podcast is THE
OSBOURNES, which is a podcast that involves
Ozzy, Sharon and their kids Kelly and Jack.
They talk about the good, the bad, the
paranormal.
19. DIGITAL PRINT
This is a local indie artist called Isabel Maria and the album
cover was created by Lauren Bowater. The album is called
THE MELODRAMATIC MILLERS CLUB. My favourite part of
this is the back cover is the typography because Lauren drew
it herself and it shows how much thought got put into the
album cover. And I love the colour schemes of the blue, blacks
and greys.
21. VISION BOARD
I found vision board to be helpful because it
helped me represent my goals and it gave me
motivation because I put a bunch of things I liked
into a powerpoint slide.
22. MY OWN PHOTOS I found it helpful to put all of my own photos of
gigs and concerts into a slide because it made
me feel more creative and feel inspired to do this
coursework
23. AUDIENCE
PROFILE
For band artists, majority of the
audience voted Alternative, Indie
and Rock
For gigs, majority said they go to
the independent and the bunker
which are both really local.
The main social media people
use is Spotify, TikTok and
Instagram.
24. CLIENT MEETING PREPARTION
In the client meeting, we discussed what we wanted to do with the band
and the band decided on a podcast. They told us about their newest song
Desperado El Dorado. We talked and they told us they’ve previously told
us they’ve done, they told us how they liked showing the fans behind the
scenes. If we were to do a showreel we would have to showcase their new
song coming out called dirty souls. In my personal opinion, I think pretty
velvet was the better option to start off with because red remedy left us half
way through the course.
25. PROJECT RATIONAL
For my final product, the class got into groups and asked the band pretty
velvet a bunch of questions and I did the videoing of the podcast whilst
Ellie and Eloise asked questions to the band. Normally, when I'm at a
concert or a gig, the first thing I tend to notice is the instruments at the
front, like the placement of where they are. The singer tends to be at the
front, the drummer being at the back, the pianist at the side and the bassist
and guitarist at opposite ends of each other. I want to have shoots of the
band on their own and together as a band. I feel like it'd get the jist of each
individual band member and their personality.
