Learning outcomes
• Have added to your understanding of the use of technology for
teaching and learning
• Understand the concepts behind Open Education and Open
Educational Resources (OER)
• Be able to identify & apply Creative Commons licenses
• Be able to retain, reuse, remix, revise and redistribute OER in your
teaching
2 ‘takeaways’
• One new idea about using technology in your teaching
• To feel informed about using ICEH’s and other Open Educational
Resources in your teaching
Discuss
• Who teaches as part of their job?
• Which settings do you teach in?
• Who are your learners?
• What kinds of technology do you use for teaching?
Technology enhanced learning (TEL): Definition
Technology is a tool
TEL is the use of technology to promote
understanding and gaining of skills
through interaction & engagement with:
– content
– teacher
– other learners
Technology can be used to reach across
time and space or as part of face to face
teaching

Summary
• Technology can be a useful tool to ‘enhance’ teaching and learning
• Keep learner needs at the centre.
• Open education aims to lower the barriers of entry to education
• Open educational resources (OERs) are free to access online materials
that educators can legally download and use in their teaching
• Educators can create their own OER and share them
• Using OERs offers benefits – and challenges - to educators

Editor's Notes

  • #19 “There is an overall culture of sharing knowledge [in India], even if this isn’t called ‘Creative Commons’. I think CC is a bit too conservative and too respectful of copyright issues. Copyright has not worked for us [in the developing world] for generations. Generally speaking, copyright in any form, including CC, doesn’t fit in too well with Asian ideas of knowledge, since it enables those controlling knowledge and information over the rest, and we find it impossible to emerge winners in this game. It is a colonial law, not meant to serve the interest of the people of those parts of the globe that are not ahead in the information race! Why should we be as respectful to it?” Frederick Noronha quoted by Marco Fioretti http://bit.ly/1pcnFy9
