2. Introduction
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the ‘things’ or
devices that are connected to the internet with a
unique IP. This capability is provided to them with the
help of embedded computing system, software and
sensors. They can exchange data with the
manufacturer, operator and/or other connected
devices and cover a variety of protocols, domains and
applications. Their use will enhance the process of
building smart wearable, smart home, smart city,
smart environment and smart enterprise.
3. Latest Trends
Hardware: For enabling IoT devices we need advanced , smaller and
cheaper Microcontrollers, Systems on Chips and Sensor technology.
Software: Data from sensors needs to be analyzed well to give insights.
This requires developers for building IoT platforms and solutions.
Analytics: Advanced analytics and dashboards will be needed to
provide insights from all the ‘things’.
Cloud Services: These ‘things’ will produce data that will need storage
space so that it can analyzed later.
Bandwidth: As more devices come online, networks will clog and
service providers will be in a never ending battle to increase network
capacity.
Product Design: Consumers will increasingly expect products to come
with embedded sensors that can be connect to mobile devices and IoT
systems.
4. Trends to Boom
IT services will be needed to build platforms that will
handle the data generated by IoT enabled devices.
Consumer goods with IoT capabilities will increase in
demand.
Service providers will compete with each other for
providing better network capacity.
New Cloud solutions will come up for the ‘things’.
5. Interest Areas
Being an electronics engineer I am interested in
embedded side of things of IoT. Using sensors,
processors & controllers to interface things to the
internet.
Connect devices to the internet at office and home to
create an IoT ecosystem that will provide better
accessibility to the devices through internet.
