Are you looking for an architect student that is already an educated building engineer? My name
is Jens Andersson and I could very well be custom-made for your Master program.
Since upper secondary school I have got a bachelor of science in engineering and been designing
prefab concrete elements. These experiences have made me realize what I want to do in my
future career. I am interested of responsibilities in various types of projects, where I can be
involved throughout the whole design process. This made me search for the architectural
program in Umeå, which has an artistic and social profile that complements my technical
background.
My goal is to combine my previous experience as a building engineer with my future profession
as an architect. I want to use the ability of structure, materials and tectonics to enhance the
overall concept of my proposals and work closely with clients, planners, craftsmen but foremost
for the users. My dream is to work within the local and regional context of my hometown
Uddevalla. "A contribution of waterfront homes in the harbor will create a living center", argues
the housing provider in the municipality of Uddevalla. How could waterfront homes by their
own promote meetings and exchanges between different types of people, as a living center
normally can offer? How could I as an architect propose something else in Uddevalla that could
encourage several social groups to meet and participate in the development of their common
city?
This application, to the master program Design for sustainable development in Gothenburg, is an
attempt to come closer to my dream and hometown. I think this program match my future
expectations by supporting a holistic view of sustainable development in a large variety of
contexts. Furthermore, it could offer me the opportunity to shape my own profile. I hereby wish
to announce my interest to start at your master program this autumn of 2016, to develop my
ability to analyze and situate local situations in relation to broader contexts.
Personally, I consider myself suitable as a part of your master program, because I have good
knowledge and experience as a building engineer and architect student. You would get a person
with a high level of ambition and commitment, who likes to develop projects through a critical
approach. I perform my responsibilities with a high level of detail, both for my own development
and to communicate correct information to my co-workers´. My acquired knowledge and my
curiosity to always learn new things, means that I would be a useful resource for your Master
program, as well as you can offer me a challenge to gain me new and valuable experiences. I hope
my background has attracted your interest to let me start your program.
Best regards
Jens Andersson

I am stuck in a traffic chaos in Ahmedabad. I feel the polluted air. The heat is even
warmer, because of idle vehicles. Endless noise is created by the horning vehicles.
The vehicles are incredible densely packed and the drivers are chatting with each
other. Suddenly my rickshaw driver goes off-road. He uses the sidewalk to avoid the
traffic jam. He horns at everything that is in front of him; people, dogs, cows, even to
a man on a galloping horse. Then he forces himself into the traffic line again.
Even though the section of the street is zoned by urban planners for different speeds,
it seems that people in Ahmedabad make up their own rules out of necessity. People
seem to be very responsive and tolerant. They know how to adapt to different
situations by noticing and helping each other. Together they are cleaning their streets,
drinking chai, reading newspaper, spitting tobacco, carrying water, feeding birds and
cows, praying, putting up markets, preparing for festivals and so on. Through daily
routines do people create public spaces with vibrant qualities. Nobody walks alone
and I felt really secure in this city.
The organized chaos of different spaces is created by and for the inhabitants. Spaces
are enclosed by thin buildings attached together creating a continuous rhythm of
varying scales. Shops are located in the ground floor and during business hours are
the sidewalks occupied by the shops. Parked scooters are used as seating places and
also forcing pedestrians another layer towards the chaotic traffic zone in the middle.
Gateways of narrow paths lead you from this chaos to a calmer atmosphere with
more personal encounters. There are hardly any places to hide. Maybe this is how it
should be, to squeeze people so closely together that social interaction is inevitable.

Mapping in India
My perception of Ahmedabad
My mapping is about how people transform the plaza of Manek Chowk in different ways during day
and night and how the different activities fill the gaps between each other. It transforms from a busy
commercial market during daytime to a festival character during evenings. I started to zone the different
activities during day and evening into these diagrammatic sections. Then I studied different kind of daily
routines of how they setting up the different spaces during day and night.

Mapping of Manek Chowk
How to create spaces within a square?
During
business
hours does
the open square
transforms into a
market place where
people can buy anything
from jewelry to towels. The
square becomes like an island,
claimed by the vendors and scooters,
which is surrounding by a constant
movement. The road through Manek Chowk
turns into a chaotic traffic corridor, since the
square is linked between major commercial areas of
the Old City. This hectic activity of circulation adds to the
pulsating nature of the square. People that either shopping
or passing through are quite busy, they comes alone or in small
groups. Shop owners are alone or consist of several family members,
but they are not that busy. The sidewalks are either claimed by the shop
owners or blocked by scooters, which force the pedestrian to compete with
the traffic or walk along the vendors. People are using the scooters as benches or
as elements that enclose spaces for encounters in-between the edges and the plaza.

During evenings
The scale of enclosure turns from vertical during the day
by surrounding buildings horizontal during evenings
by human activity and the ceiling of artificial lightning.
The spicy food, the heat from cooking and the densely
enclosure of standing people and dinner tables makes
you perspire a lot when you are eating here.
To conclude I met the owner of Balan Dosa (yellow
crew), one of the food market stalls, and he told me
something like this: “Manek Chowk never sleeps and
it is always activated. This means security. Security for
the shop owners of jewelry and gold, since there are
no robbery here. Security for women who even comes
alone during the evenings. This food bazaar has been
running every evening in over 50 years and we have a
permission that says that this my space after 8 pm. We
are happy to be here and the shop owners are happy
that we are here during the nights. This concept really
works.”

The culture of Robertsfors is more than music. Handicraft and visual arts,
are strong and alive. Spindelväven is a cultural house that is driven by the
municipality and not bound to an association or to private interests. Spin-
delVäven is mainly designed to create a possible exchange between dif-
ferent arts and crafts, like graffiti, timber making, textile, dance and music,
which are today separated and more or less private activities in Robertsfors.

We were born to make. We make to share.
To share is the real payoff, both for you and
the whole community. SpindelVäven makes it
possible for the community to learn how to
make and share their skills. Hear you can ex-
press yourself by making your own stuff next
to others. By doing so, you show what you are
making and be confirmed by people that will
ask for your advice. This place supports the
interplay between different generations and
the productive do-it yourself lifestyles in Rob-
ertsfors.
The activities are placed in separate buildings
to connect the both sides and to enhance
certain qualities of the site. They are connect-
ed by an outdoor canopy that re-directs the
movement through the site. SpindelVäven
works as a framing boundary that creates out-
door voids. Here is a common square created
that allow the different activities to expand in
summer. The canopy and square work both as
meeting point between the different activities
and between each activity and people that
move through the site.

A Maker Space
SpindelVäven is placed in the west-
ern glade of the river, right across the
social space where people gather for
“Valborg” and New Year’s Eve. The site
of SpindelVäven has two different con-
ditions, one towards the river and town
in north and one towards the Brännan
part in south. From north is Spin-
delVäven visible but unreach-
able. From south is it hidden
but accessible. It is placed
here to connect the both
sides of the river by
introducing another
kind of movement
than the existing
one back and

Storgatan.

Almost everything is designed
with timber to mirror local
and traditional building tech-
niques. The covering boarding
is continuous from the roof to
the façade and it is painted
with Swedish traditional red
color. The horizontal decks are
exposed and will have an age-
ing effect. The canopy roof
has the same covering as the
ground, grass in summer and
snow in winter.

This main indoor space
could be used for wedding
dinners, parties, exhibi-

a replica of the television
show Let´s Dance could
start here. People in Rob-

in the preperations as well
as perform by playing
music, dance, judge, sew-

audience… They can learn
how to collectively set up
a performance and start a
new tradition that unifies
the community.

  • 4. I am stuck in a traffic chaos in Ahmedabad. I feel the polluted air. The heat is even warmer, because of idle vehicles. Endless noise is created by the horning vehicles. The vehicles are incredible densely packed and the drivers are chatting with each other. Suddenly my rickshaw driver goes off-road. He uses the sidewalk to avoid the traffic jam. He horns at everything that is in front of him; people, dogs, cows, even to a man on a galloping horse. Then he forces himself into the traffic line again. Even though the section of the street is zoned by urban planners for different speeds, it seems that people in Ahmedabad make up their own rules out of necessity. People seem to be very responsive and tolerant. They know how to adapt to different situations by noticing and helping each other. Together they are cleaning their streets, drinking chai, reading newspaper, spitting tobacco, carrying water, feeding birds and cows, praying, putting up markets, preparing for festivals and so on. Through daily routines do people create public spaces with vibrant qualities. Nobody walks alone and I felt really secure in this city. The organized chaos of different spaces is created by and for the inhabitants. Spaces are enclosed by thin buildings attached together creating a continuous rhythm of varying scales. Shops are located in the ground floor and during business hours are the sidewalks occupied by the shops. Parked scooters are used as seating places and also forcing pedestrians another layer towards the chaotic traffic zone in the middle. Gateways of narrow paths lead you from this chaos to a calmer atmosphere with more personal encounters. There are hardly any places to hide. Maybe this is how it should be, to squeeze people so closely together that social interaction is inevitable. • 5. My mapping is about how people transform the plaza of Manek Chowk in different ways during day and night and how the different activities fill the gaps between each other. It transforms from a busy commercial market during daytime to a festival character during evenings. I started to zone the different activities during day and evening into these diagrammatic sections. Then I studied different kind of daily routines of how they setting up the different spaces during day and night. Moving scooters to make space for street food Holes indicate where he used to place his stall... The traffic is blocked for a moment......which starts to activate the space Daily vendor meeting food stall Vendors use scooters as enclosure elements of space Pedestrians are directed in front of vendors Pedestrians are directed in front of vendors UMA 3Umeå School of Architecture uma 3The megapolis of Ahmedabad 2015-2016 Jens AnderssonMapping and development strategies Mapping of Manek Chowk How to create spaces within a square?
  • 6. During business hours does the open square transforms into a market place where people can buy anything from jewelry to towels. The square becomes like an island, claimed by the vendors and scooters, which is surrounding by a constant movement. The road through Manek Chowk turns into a chaotic traffic corridor, since the square is linked between major commercial areas of the Old City. This hectic activity of circulation adds to the pulsating nature of the square. People that either shopping or passing through are quite busy, they comes alone or in small groups. Shop owners are alone or consist of several family members, but they are not that busy. The sidewalks are either claimed by the shop owners or blocked by scooters, which force the pedestrian to compete with the traffic or walk along the vendors. People are using the scooters as benches or as elements that enclose spaces for encounters in-between the edges and the plaza. • 8. The scale of enclosure turns from vertical during the day by surrounding buildings horizontal during evenings by human activity and the ceiling of artificial lightning. The spicy food, the heat from cooking and the densely enclosure of standing people and dinner tables makes you perspire a lot when you are eating here. To conclude I met the owner of Balan Dosa (yellow crew), one of the food market stalls, and he told me something like this: “Manek Chowk never sleeps and it is always activated. This means security. Security for the shop owners of jewelry and gold, since there are no robbery here. Security for women who even comes alone during the evenings. This food bazaar has been running every evening in over 50 years and we have a permission that says that this my space after 8 pm. We are happy to be here and the shop owners are happy that we are here during the nights. This concept really works.” UMA 3Umeå School of Architecture uma 3The megapolis of Ahmedabad 2015-2016 Jens AnderssonMapping and development strategies Mapping of Manek Chowk Conclusions and Reflections

To share is the real payoff, both for you and the whole community. SpindelVäven makes it possible for the community to learn how to make and share their skills. Hear you can ex- press yourself by making your own stuff next to others. By doing so, you show what you are making and be confirmed by people that will ask for your advice. This place supports the interplay between different generations and the productive do-it yourself lifestyles in Rob- ertsfors. The activities are placed in separate buildings to connect the both sides and to enhance certain qualities of the site. They are connect- ed by an outdoor canopy that re-directs the movement through the site. SpindelVäven works as a framing boundary that creates out- door voids. Here is a common square created that allow the different activities to expand in summer. The canopy and square work both as meeting point between the different activities and between each activity and people that move through the site. • 12. SpindelVäven is placed in the west- ern glade of the river, right across the social space where people gather for “Valborg” and New Year’s Eve. The site of SpindelVäven has two different con- ditions, one towards the river and town in north and one towards the Brännan part in south. From north is Spin- delVäven visible but unreach- able. From south is it hidden but accessible. It is placed here to connect the both sides of the river by introducing another kind of movement than the existing one back and forth along Storgatan. The interior consist of exposed timber struc- ture and white painted timber covering. The exte- rior covering has gaps in front of selected windows to filter the light into the tool cabinets and as in- sight protection from the canopy. The skylight reflects on the glue laminated beams into the main space. Light through a floor opening reflects down to ground level along the edges. This creates seating place at the upper floor between the beams.
