4. HQ Waterfront
The Competition for the Wonders Informa-
tion Headquarter offer an unique opportu-
nity for the devlopment of the West Bank
riverside of Shanghai.
The aim is to realize the corporate’s hea-
dquarter along with offices for renting and
commercial spaces along the riverbank.
Its triangular shape asks for a extraordinary
design solution. The new design for the
Wonders Information headquarter should
comply with two mayor visual connections
in the masterplan. The prominent location
along the XuHui river offers excellent views
towards the riverbank skyline and Pudong.
For this reason the building blocks are rota-
ted in a way that they benefit from excellent
views to the environment.
Headquarters, offices and commercial
podium form one volume but are clearly
separated by color, rotation and extrusion
direction. Different blocks create various
sizes of floor plans to fit a wide variety of
program.
The proposed arrangement welcomes
green terraces to enjoy the visual and
social bene ts of the amazing river view.

Governative Offices
professional work | preliminary design | 2014
team member of: SLArchitecture, Shanghai.
The project involves the construction of five
governmental office buildings along the ri-
ver that crosses the city of Haimen. One of
the priorities was to connect the new go-
vernmental complex with the government
offices tower in front of the road, recently
completed by SLArchitecture Chief Archi-
tect Li Yao.
The five buildings are positioned along an
arc in which the midpoints of the segments
converge towards the existing government
building across the road.
This arc is reflected on the public space in
front of the offices, creating gardens and
pools where citizens can gather for walking,
doing sport and activities. Open terraces,
interior courtyards and a second imaginary
vertical arc, across the different building’s
heights, aims to visually connect each one
of the 5 volumes. So do the facades, si-
milar to each office building but never the
same as they are composed by a basic
module consisting of 3 changable alumi-
num panels , which mimic the different co-
lors of the river and sky during the day.
5. Cultural Center
The competition for Fuzhou Cultural & Art
Center was a great opportunity to explo-
re the design for an outstanding space of
100876 m2
including Art exhibition, Audi-
torium, Theater, Backstage & Restauran-
ts, Cinemas and a Commercial area. The
huge space is thought as a whole con-
nected city where art spaces and public
space constantly confront each other in a
dynamic way. The succession of spaces is
enclosed into two main parallelepiped bo-
dies connected by a steel truss structure
spanning two levels and hosting restauran-
ts and interior courtyards.
The resulting glass facade enclose an ama-
zing public area crossed by the river where
raised decks and platforms converge the
pedestrian flux. The four cylindric tubes
contain lifts and provide structural help for
the spanning structure. Its represent also
banyan roots, the emblema of the city. The
relationship between building and tree is
developed furthermore by the facade de-
sign that imitates the tree’s foliage, using
different parameters of transparency de-
pending of the face exposure and function.

The museum plan consists in a lar-
ge 90 meters wide hexagon that
is reflected on the sinuous roof.
I used Rhinoceros and Grasshopper for
finding the right pattern and for the beam
woven structure. The roof membrane was
developed with Grasshopper and than mo-
deled into details with the help of T Spline.
The irregular structure of the roof is hold
together by beams made by an hexa-
gonal unit of laminated timber that form
a canopy which pattern is similar to an
oriental cane-work, that can be found on
many small scale objects such as hats.
The roof is supported by four pillar and a
central 77 meters height tower. There is a
protective white fiberglass membrane and a
teflonlayerthatprotectsfromsunraysindayti-
me and becomes translucent during night.
The huge space of the nave gives a lot of
freedom for exhibitions and multipurpose
functions while the galleries are hosted in the
three parallelepiped boxes at different levels.

6. International Home
Study of a two floor villa based on some of
the principles formulated during the Interna-
tional Style period.
The Design emphasis is on the balance
of few regular volumes and the function it
will contain.
The solid parts are reduced to essential
white, flat surfaces alternating with areas of
glass.
The overall composition uses most stright
horizontal and vertical lines and few mate-
rials: reinforced concrete, glass and black
steel frames.
Long horizontal windows and roof skylights
allows that all rooms are lit equally, maximi-
zing the panoramic view.
The interiors are a dynamic succesion of
free and flexible open spaces.
A circular path connects them all, star-
ting from the garage, to the dining room,
kitchen, properly nested in the middle of
the house, an outdoor veranda and living
room. At second floor are located two gue-
sts room a small study room and a big stu-
dio (above the garage). Master bedroom
and a large bathroom are positioned inside
the suspended box.

This elegant villa has been commissioned
by a private client in the coastal area of
Santa Cruz, in Tenerife Island. Located on
top of an hill the villa has a magnifcent view
over the the Atlantic. This factor determina-
ted the S shape of the volume.
The south facade, looking the Ocean is
almost entirely glazed. The walls follow
elegant lines creating solid white volumns,
a typicl architectural characteristic that is
found among some of the historical mo-
dern architecture influenced district of the
town.
The structure develops on two floor abo-
ve ground and one spacious basement.
The first floor east wing is a big public part,
almost entirly develop as an open space
connecting kitchen, living room with the pa-
tio and the swimming pool. Unnecessary
walls are eliminated, keeping the space bri-
ght and open to the oceanic breezes.
A central corridor connects the public zone
with both the west wing, where the client
private rooms are and the upper floor whe-
re are two single rooms, two bathrooms
and a small loundry.

The project provides the extension of three
new floors above the three existing levels of
a narrow building in the center of Turin. The
main constraints of the project are: width
and depth of sleeve (8m x 13m); obliga-
tion to retain the facade facing the street;
elevation of the building up to the eaves
of the adjacent building (≈ 20 m). It was
also required to design the apartments with
four different house typology. To achieve
this goal all the internal divisions have been
made on the basis of the minimum values
allowed by the building code of Turin’s city.
The east facade, facing the street has a
brick cladding, satisfying the energy requi-
rements and connecting the new extension
to the contest, the nearby Colosseum the-
ater, which use brick clad as well and to
the nearby Porte Palatine, well conserved
ancient Roman ruins of the ancient north
gate of the city. The west facade could
be completely redone, opting for a more
regular and functional brick facade, adding
balconies to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere
of the private courtyard.
Details of the east facade on street and the connection between new brick cladding extension and old facade. The brickwork’ facade
is a reference to the nearby Palatine Gate, excellent preserved 1st- century BC Roman gateways.
Function analysis - Cutting the volume - Extrude the volume - Bending the volume.
The most important Art Institute of who-
le Indonesia is located in YogYakarta and
attracts students from whole world. The
accessible prices of living and proliferation
of art, performances and cultural events
generates a remarkable activity and nume-
rous exhibitions are hold at the same time.
The open, artistic and young crowed is
hungry for spaces that can hold several
functions: gathering, exhibiting, presenting
event and meeting curators and collectors.
The Bending Unit
provides the city with this new typology.
Meeting the needs of the artists isn’t the only
goal. By modifying the traditional rectangualr
building typology into a more organic one
the landscape is included, blur-
ring the idea of interior and exterior.
The city its crossed by long and almost
rectilinear north-south arteries. The high
presence of rice fields interlaced with
endless rectilinear roads create a pa-
tchwork of long and narrow plots. In this
unique landscape, buildings seem to flo-
at in the middle of a flat sea of rice fields.

8. Emergency Shelters
After the late 2010 Volcano Merapi eruption
near the city of Yogyakarta, in central Java
several villages in Magelang and Muntilan
districts were completely destroyed. New
houses for those who lost their dwellings
were built by Head Architect Pradipto that
designed 20 houses on stilts, each mea-
suring 4x6 meters, occupying an area of
1500sm. The unit designed has two floors,
three bedrooms, a common space, semi
open kitchen on the back of the house.
The new houses were completed in just 6
weeks under the direction of Architect and
Professor Pradipto and involved 30 stu-
dents of Architecture of University Gadjah
Mada.
The final cost was equivalent to $ 15,000.
Bamboo was the natural choice as main
building material. Cheap, abundant and
familiar to locals. Due to the emergency
the bamboo skipped the normal process
of impregnation, a treatment necessary for
his good conservation. All connections use
bolts to join efficiently bamboo, walls and
floors use traditional construction systems,
the roof use corrugated metal sheet.

The design for the primary school in Shu-
zou is based on the historical link with the
legendary, world heritage protected, city
courtyards.
The interior courtyard in particular is a refe-
rence to the traditional merchant’s home of
Suzhou and reflects a similar space confi-
guration as in the past: headmaster and of-
fice on the west, services on the rear north
wing, classrooms on the shout wing and
entrance from the east. The courtyard ser-
ves basic functional purposes as well: se-
curity, privacy, space communication and
helps creating a natural micro climate, le-
veling temperature and improving air quality.
The school implements several green stra-
tegies for minimizing maintenance expan-
ses and improving overall space quality.
Thanks to the large windows exposed to
south the classrooms enjoy much of the
daylight. Overheating is avoided by large
overhangs running along the south face,
partially covered by bamboo plants, which
brenches helps screening direct sun rays
and minimizing glare.

9. Restaurant
The Schematic design for the Mushroom
Restaurant is part of the NanHai urban cen-
ter redevelopment, a vast urban regenera-
tion programme commisioned by the local
government. It focus on the improvment of
the facades, streets and urban design. Tu-
rism and local culinary speciality are seen
as important factors that could revitalize the
community and its economy. Mushrooms
are at the base of many of Nanhai local re-
cipe.
The characteristic shape in which mushro-
om grows inspired the restaurant shape, a
main hall connected to a private meeting
room and a welcoming space. Organic
materials and sustainable construction te-
chniques are at the core of the design. Lo-
cally grown and harvested thatch is layered
on top of the bamboo structure, providing
a low cost and sustainable building solution
for the roof. The roof substructure is com-
posed of three layers of bamboo sourced
locally. Bamboo joints can integrate modern
techniques and traditional construction
methods. Walls use grey bricks, which can
be found in most of the Jiangsu traditional
dwellings.

The design for the primary school near
Mombasa is the result of the particular so-
cial and climate influences of this region and
propose a conscious design where Arabic
and Swahili architectural solutions are com-
bined in an efficient, secure and comfor-
table community oriented space.
Climate influence: light seasonal variations.
Heavy rain or no rain, direct equatorial sun
rays, high radiations.
Social influence: rich Swahili heritage mixed
with a strong presence of Arabic culture.
The environmental solutions borrowed
both Vernacular Swahili elements and typi-
cal Islamic architectural aspects. As a re-
sult privacy, screens, courtyards, inward
organization of the spaces, narrow pas-
sway, mutual shading are combined with
overhangs, cross ventilation, ventilated
attics, light reflective roofs and thick walls.
Materials and construction:
The historical local materials included are:
palm fronds, mangrove poles and coral,
which is easily available on east Africa coast
and can be structural in 440-550mm thick
walls.
