Laboratory Investigation to evaluate the applicability of high percentages of SSA (Steel Slag
Aggregates) in bituminous mixtures type AC 20 (bituminous macadam) for base and binder
coarse in road infrastructures. This study consists in the characterization of SSA for
assessing it’s geometric, physical, mechanical and environmental properties, the formulation
of the bituminous mixtures with the incorporated SSA and finally, evaluating the mixtures
performance for subsequent comparison with the traditional mixtures as an alternative for
natural aggregates.
This work had also the partnership of HARSCO Metals and Mineral and the Portuguese
National Steel Industry.
