6. Rubbish!
• James – statistically underachieving – thinks
nothing of sending 80 texts per day.
• John – played a computer game continuously
for 16 hours.
• YR 10 IT class survey – 24 students spent an
average of 2+ hours per night playing
computer games.
• One student spent 4 hours playing computer
games on a school night.

7. NC College ‘App’
• Can’t be turned off except in the *holidays.
• Wakes the student and keeps turning the alarm on .
• Rings the parents if the student is marked
late/absent.
• Rings the police if the parents don’t respond!
• Has the students timetable and reminds student
where to go and when – before they have to be there
• Has homework reminders.
• Has coursework and assignment deadlines with aural
countdowns that interrupt their music.

8. It gets better!
• Requires the student to complete timed e –
assignments.
• *Homework to be replaced by e-work – some tests
can be made to mark, grade and place themselves in a
spread sheet.
• No ‘wriggle room’ – the dog won’t eat a smartphone!
• Sends student motivational texts – from their mentor.
• Builds confidence and raises aspirations by tracking
the students own improvement in tests and providing
feedback.
• And so on ….. all the above are possible today!

• Initial CPD with guaranteed tea, coffee and
biscuits – and time.
• Early adopters.
• Trials.
• Once the benefits are quantifiable the
innovation becomes viable.
• Radical – change the timing of the student day
to build in e-lesson time.
