- Some of MANY resources for worksheets. Ask audience if they have others to suggest.
- There are many reasons to use worksheets during the learning process. Especially when teaching new concepts, direct instruction might involve more passive watching or observation. Worksheets offer hands-on opportunity for students to apply new learning. Worksheets can help learners concentrate or focus on key components within presented information, either within the classroom environment or even material addressed in a textbook. Worksheets facilitate communication within thematic content as well as make connections as understanding within a content area evolves or deepens. Used strategically, worksheets can serve to scaffold attention during classroom activities. For example, a student might receive a worksheet before the teacher engages in explicit instruction. The worksheet might even support vocabulary building by showing a word bank. Throughout the instruction the student can engage with the worksheet, interacting with key information as content is presented. In this sense the worksheet can also serve as a respectful way to prompt learners toward understanding key themes in the content.
- Research shows that repetitive practice helps a learner toward automaticity. This means that the learner is able to apply skills independently and spontaneously in order to accomplish a more real-world task. The learner doesn’t think about the skill explicitly, only the task in which the skill need be applied. The learner does not focus on lower order thinking, but instead uses what he already knows to think through a more complex task. For example, a learner needs to understand basic math facts, a lower order thinking skill, in order to compare prices, a higher order thinking skill. Similarly, a learner needs to understand decoding rules in sounding out new words in order to become a fluent and independent reader. Automaticity develops through repetition and practice. Developing automaticity facilitates deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and reading foundational skills alike. Worksheets offer one often used method of providing this repetition and practice. Research further suggests that teacher-directed instruction paired with worksheets for skills practice and extending learning is associated with significant academic gains. Basic foundation skills need to become routine so that the brain can focus on application of that skill.
- However, we have challenges including everyone. Worksheets are typically presented to the student on paper in print. Working with paper and pencil brings accessibility challenges for many learners. Some students may require support due to visual processing or vision challenges. Others may require physical support for using a pencil, handwriting, or accessing the writing surface itself. Still others may require literacy support that might include: decoding, fluency, comprehension, auditory processing, or vocabulary development.
