- The 4 primary use cases for moving AU apps to the cloud (often referred to as Lift and Shift in the industry, and that we are now calling Move and Improve) include: Dev/Test in the Cloud Backup and DR in the Cloud Production in the Cloud Extending the Data Center In addition to those listed above, “partial migrations” might be a use case that makes sense where the core ERP app remains on premises, but a new module is deployed in the cloud We’re able to support a full range of use cases and deployment architectures. You can dip your toe in the water with non-production options such as demo/training, creating a sandbox environment in our cloud, development/customization and testing/integration. Validate patches and test new cloud-native application development tools like containers. OCI offers 2 managed container services including a Docker Registry and a managed Kubernetes cluster service Disaster Recovery is a great way to get started in the cloud as well. Failover a few times, and if and when you are ready to migrate production workloads over, it’ll be that much easier. Database and content backup and archive in the cloud are also use cases we often support for our customers. - IMPROVE OCI takes advantage of high scale, high bandwidth networks that connect cloud servers to high performance local, file, block, and object storage to deliver a cloud platform that yields the highest performance for traditional and distributed applications, as well as highly available databases. In short, OCI is architected to support the applications that enterprises have been running for years, as well as those they are creating for the future. OCI offers the ability to run everything from small VMs to large bare metal clusters and highly available databases on the same isolated networks, accessible through the same APIs and console – allowing apps to have direct, low-latency access to high-performance DBs running on physical or virtual servers in the same infrastructure. With OCI, businesses can run applications requiring millions of IOPs, millisecond latency, and many GB/s of guaranteed bandwidth, on a pay-per-use or monthly credit model. They can build cloud environments with equal or better performance and predictability than dedicated, on-premises environments. In fact, most customers report workloads running on OCI typically show performance results exceeding their on-premises environment. Compute Whether a workload requires a single virtual machine or demands the high performance, consistency and isolation offered by our bare metal servers, OCI offers the broadest spectrum of cloud compute options available in the industry today. OCI compute options include virtual machines (VMs), bare metal instances, dedicated compute and Oracle Cloud at Customer (on-premises public cloud behind the customer’s firewall); complimented by migration solutions like Ravello Service and migration and provisioning tools designed to expedite the migration of Oracle Applications to the cloud. Storage To provide the best end-user experience, applications need to connect directly to the data they access. Toward that end, we offer secure and scalable cloud-based storage solutions ideal for storing and accessing data from any environment connected to the Internet. OCI storage options include local NVMe flash storage, all-flash block storage, object and archive storage, database backup storage, and a software appliance for an on-premises file storage front-end to the cloud. We also offer a Data Transfer Service, which enables high volume data transfer from on-premises datacenters to Oracle Cloud Object Storage, leveraging offline media like hard disk drives allowing companies to significantly reduce the amount of required to move their data into the Oracle Cloud. Networking OCI provides API-accessible Virtual Cloud Networks (VCN) and load balancing capabilities. These highly configurable solutions allow organizations to match on-premises setups, thus not having to re-write networking specifications within applications. We also provide network edge services such as DNS. Database OCI has a number of unique features and tools that are geared to migrate and/or run Oracle’s databases and business applications portfolio with unmatched scalability and reliability. Minimal architecture changes are needed to move Oracle Applications, reducing the cost and length of migration to the cloud. Proven technologies like RAC are available, retaining best practices and confidence. And the latest hardware and technologies are available, improving database and application performance and results: Oracle Databases: Oracle Databases scale to many times the storage capacity and performance of competitors, reaching up to 268 terabytes of capacity and millions of IOPS per instance. Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC): Running RAC on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure provides database High Availability (HA) with failover in seconds, performance scaling into the hundreds of thousands of IOPS, and seamless operations via rolling patches and upgrades. This offering introduces a new cloud-based standard for production database applications. Oracle Exadata: Run partial or full rack Exadata form factors in the same enhanced regions, and on the same virtual cloud networks as bare metal compute and other OCI services – controlled with the same set of governance tools, and accessible via the same console/APIs. Providing maximum scalability, database storage can scale to 268 terabytes and process millions of IOPS. All of the above allows enterprises the level of control they are used to on-premises, but with better performance.
- There are 3 basic options for how Apps Unlimited gets deployed on IaaS. 1) The application and the Database both run on Oracle Cloud infrastructure. In this instance the customer controls both the application and the mid-tier. This will be the case often when a customer has a partner managing their implementation for them 2) The application and its customizations run on OCI, but the Database runs on on Database Cloud Service to take advantage of the services DCS provides 3) The final option is actually the same implementation as the second option, except in this case it is consumed as a managed service where either Oracle or a partner manages the entire implementation for the customer.
