This is a research presentation from my advanced quantitative research methods class. I generated a research question, selected variables from a national data set, and used to SAS to analyze the data.
According to the WHO, malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality
Under-weight births and IUGR (intra-uterine growth restrictions) cause 3 million child deaths a year.
According to the Lancet, consequences of malnutrition in the first two years is irreversible.
Malnourished children grow up with worse health and lower educational achievements.
Malnutrition can exacerbate the problem of diseases such as measles, pneumonia and diarrhoea.
But malnutrition can actually cause diseases itself , and can be fatal in its own right
The term 'faltering growth' is widely used in relation to infants and young children whose weight gain occurs more slowly than expected for their age and sex.
In the past, this was often described as a ‘failure to thrive’ but this is no longer the preferred term :-
partly because ‘failure’ could be perceived as negative,
but also because lesser degrees of faltering growth may not necessarily indicate a significant problem but merely represent variation from the usual pattern when measured against the standardized growth charts (WHO Growth Charts
Weighing of the child at regular intervals, the plotting of that weight on a graph (called a growth chart) enabling one to see changes in weight, and giving advice to the mother based on this weight change is called ‘GROWTH MONITORING’

How does each article describe the nature of the problem, issue, or deficit you have identified?
Studies describing postpartum childcare practices and the influence of prenatal care on infant care outcomes in rural China are scarce. Inadequate care was positively associated with never breastfeeding, early introduction of milk formula and cereal/porridge, and early start of work after delivery.
Does each article provide statistical information to demonstrate the gravity of the issue, problem, or deficit?
Yes! Data were available from a Knowledge, Attitude and Perception cross-sectional survey collected from 2001 to 2003, after a prenatal care intervention in Anhui County, China, with a response rate of 97%.
What are example(s) of morbidity, mortality, and rate of incidence or rate of occurrence in the general population?
None Identified
Does each article support your proposed change?
Yes, it does

It assesses the knowledge and practices of mothers about breastfeeding Practices Cross- sectional study was carried out for a period of one month.
Does each article provide statistical information to demonstrate the gravity of the issue, problem, or deficit?
A total of 162 postnatal mothers admitted in postnatal ward constitute the sample size. The data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires. Data was analyzed by using SPSS 16th version. The study shows that 21(12.9%) of the babies were feed with prelacteal feeds like honey and sugar water.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Acute scrotum is a general term referring to an emergency condition affecting the contents or the wall of the scrotum.
There are a number of conditions that present acutely, predominantly with pain and/or swelling
A careful and detailed history and examination, and in some cases, investigations allow differentiation between these diagnoses. A prompt diagnosis is essential as the patient may require urgent surgical intervention
Testicular torsion refers to twisting of the spermatic cord, causing ischaemia of the testicle.
Testicular torsion results from inadequate fixation of the testis to the tunica vaginalis producing ischemia from reduced arterial inflow and venous outflow obstruction.
The prevalence of testicular torsion in adult patients hospitalized with acute scrotal pain is approximately 25 to 50 percent

Motherly Joy: The Impact of Maternal Psychological Well-Being on Infant Birthweight Outcomes
1. MOTHERLY JOY
The Impact of Maternal PsychologicalWell-Being on
Infant Birthweight Outcomes
Amanda Rostic, MPH
2. Introduction
■ A multitude of factors can impact infant birth
weight.
– Maternal drug and alcohol use
– Genetics
– Maternal age andWeight
– Pre-existing medical conditions
■ Low infant birth weight has been well-studied
because it is a leading cause of morbidity and
mortality amongst infants (Torche, 2011).
■ Social science fields have begun to explore the
impact of maternal emotional and psychological
health on infant birth weight
■ Research Question: Is maternal well-being an
adequate predictor of infant birth weight?
3. Methods
■ The survey population consisted of
noninstitutionalized women ages 15-44 years
who resided within the United States of America
(CDC, 2016).
■ Institutionalized women were excluded from the
study. Excluded institutions included: prisons,
juvenile detention centers, psychiatric hospitals,
homes for the intellectually disabled, and military
bases.
■ Interesting:
– Approximately 20% of interviews were conducted
with teenagers 15-19 years of age (CDC, 2016).
– Approximately 55% of all those interviewed were
female (CDC, 2016).
• Data was obtained from the National
Survey of Family Growth (NSFG).
• 2011-2013 cycles

■ SAS Code:To answer the research question proc reg was
used to run simple linear regression and multiple
regression.

• Proc means and proc freq were both utilized
to help produce descriptive information
about the data.
• Proc reg was used to analyze each variable
individually with infant birthweight as the
outcome. (SLR)
• Each variable was placed in a model with
infant birthweight as the outcome. (MLR)

6. Discussion ■ The aim of our research was to determine if maternal
well-being was an adequate predictor of infant
birthweight.
■ Further analysis should be conducted however, based
on the significant results obtained from SLR and MLR
maternal well-being should be considered a variable
worth measuring
■ Mental health is an important topic in public health.
Awareness, recognition and proper treatment are key
for long-term success. By acknowledging mental health
during pregnancy we stand to help two patients.
■ From a PH viewpoint addressing mental well-being
during pregnancy could be used as method to help
decrease post-partum depression (i.e. primary
prevention)
• Limitations: Based on our study design
we were unable to formally infer a
causal relationship between maternal
mental health and infant birthweight.
• Other considerations:We should have
explored education more as a possible
effect modifier or confounder because
education level often plays a role in
occupation and income.
• Strengths:We had a large amount data
and we did find significance which can
help demonstrate that this warrants
further investigation.
