The nanny, Nanny Deb, was called to help the chaotic Finck family. She observed that the family struggled with communication, with the children acting out and the parents inconsistent. The husband did not support the wife.
Nanny Deb implemented rules to improve communication, such as no whining, no hitting, and being consistent. She rewarded compliance and improved conversations between family members. This was different than the parents' approaches, as the mother was inconsistent and the father did not get involved. Ron Tyler and his wife became foster parents in 1997. Their second foster child, Daniel, was a 7-year old biracial boy with behavioral issues. Daniel struggled in school and had violent outbursts at home, creating stress for the family. After two years, they realized they could not provide the individual attention Daniel needed and found a more appropriate placement for him. This experience inspired Tyler to create a day respite program to help foster families and prevent placement disruptions. The program was successful and continues today under a new name, helping hundreds of children.

Several of these students have significant academic issues and/or emotional issues that may impact their performance. This performance-based assessment requires you to identify and research the societal or cultural issues that are faced by four of these students and how they impact their achievement.
Using PowerPoint or Google Slides, you are to create a presentation appropriate for use with other educators or parents. In this presentation you are to do the following:
• Identify each student and the issue he or she is facing.

Case study 1:
Brandy is a Caucasian girl, who just celebrated her sixth birthday, and is one of the youngest kids in her
first-grade class. Most of the school year has gone fairly well, but she lately has been having trouble at
school. Last week she disrupted class and threw her pencil across the room.
The teacher explained to the parents that she has been a bit “emotional” lately, but did not know why. Her
mom wondered if it was because she has recently transitioned from graduate school to a new job that
keeps her away from home a bit more than before.
Brandy generally likes school, but gets pulled out once or twice a week for special speech therapy as she
occasionally has some problems with a lisp. Her parents were hesitant about Brandy being pulled out of
class, but when she reported she was getting picked on at school by some classmates, they agreed to the
speech therapy.
At home, she has a supportive family and siblings (younger and older) with whom she gets along well.
Occasionally she will get into trouble for lying, but most often feels pretty badly about it once she is caught.
Her father also has a master’s degree with a full-time job, and she and her siblings attend an after-school
daycare program for a couple hours. She plays with the neighborhood kids and her siblings; however
sometimes Brandy has communication struggles with others due to her lisp. She loves sports, and just
finished playing soccer and is set to start t-ball within the next week or two.
Case study 2:
Brandon is an African-American eight-year-old child in third grade, who is in danger of having to repeat the
grade. He continues to struggle with being able to concentrate in class, and says he is “bored” when
students have to just sit and read; sometimes he talks and walks around the class and other times he draws
pictures and pays no attention at all. He frequently gets sent to the principal’s office for this behavior, but
does not seem to mind because the principal lets him play and gives him snacks (as he always complains
about being hungry). Often the principal compliments him on his artwork.
When his parents were told about his behavior, they were exasperated. The parents said he behaves even
more poorly at home, stealing and breaking his siblings’ things and sneaking food into his room. He even
has nightly bed-wetting accidents on a fairly regular basis (the doctor has ruled out physical problems as a
reason for these).
His mother works a part-time job at a local gas station when the kids are in school. His father used to come
home around dinnertime and was often tired; but he was recently laid off and is depressed and spends a lot
of time in bed.

Case study of lady ludelyn dancel
Lady Ludelyn Dancel was an adopted child who struggled with anger and mistrust issues. Through cognitive forgiveness exercises where she worked to forgive her birth parents for financial difficulties that led to her adoption, her anger diminished. As her trust in her adoptive mother grew, her overreactions in anger decreased. Medication also helped stabilize her mood. Developing a relationship with religious figures like Our Lady provided a sense of protection that reduced fears of abandonment. Ultimately, through forgiveness and support from her adoptive family, Lady was able to resolve her emotional conflicts and feel happy, safe, and content in her situation.

Jennie is 8 years old, the eldest of four children. She lives at home with her mother and siblings in Section 8 housing in a small midwestem city. Her father has been an infrequent part of their lives due to repeated convictions for drug offenses.
Jennie was born prematurely after a difficult pregnancy. Her mother has had the support of a "Mentor Mom" since before Jennie was born. The Mentor Mom program was established in their area to assist young, inexperienced mothers who otherwise would have few supports in caring for their babies. The Mentor Mom's role is similar to that of grandmothers, mothers, and aunts in times when extended families were able to help new parents learn to parent their own children. The Mentor Mom has helped Jennie's mother with child-rearing information and problem-solving support over the years. Jennie frequently spends time with the Mentor Mom at her home in the country. The family client is made up of a father, mother, and their son, a ten-year-old boy. The family is biracial and is made up of four people; father, mother, a ten-year-old son, and a seven-year-old daughter. Initially, they had visited the clinic on a referral basis from the family’s psychiatrist. They had concerns with the behavioral issues their ten-year-old son exhibited while at home as well as at school. The son is currently in fifth grade and attends a public school, the mother runs a local coffee shop in their neighborhood, and the father is a construction worker. The mother was talkative and soon started talking about stressors in life, including their son’s behavioral issues. She states that besides receiving services and extra help her son gets while at school, he is still lagging behind. The exact services had not been explained. The father did not talk much. In fact, he sat away from the family and always displayed a sarcastic grin on his face every time the mother complained. The son was friendly but did not talk much.
After assessments and evaluations, diagnostic evaluations established that the kid had ADHD. In addition to this, the family displayed tendencies of dysfunctional interactions. Once the family unit was mentioned, the mother was quick to state that she believes that there was an issue with the way the whole family functioned. She further suggested that they needed help as a family to understand their situation better as we as know why their son was having behavioral issues. Family therapy was suggested. Everyone but the father readily consented to the suggestion. He later on consented.
Over the past two sessions, the father seemed uncomfortable and hardly participated. He would once in a while tell his wife to shut up when confronted and criticized. The mother always brought up her dissatisfaction with the way her husband lacked warmth and concern for their son’s issues. She felt that the whole burden of raising their kids was on her. She further stated that without him interfering, the son would soon influence their younger daughter, which was already happening. The son spent much of the time stooped over the table due to attention being always on him. He was always silent and uncomfortable.
Interactions between the clients were more complicated than anticipated, and too much time was spent on the interaction between the mother and the therapist. A therapeutic relationship was easily formed between the mother and the therapist. The other members of the family hesitated, with a continual alli.

Roddy is a 15-year-old African American female student with learning disabilities in language arts and math. She loves attention and has had behavioral issues this year, but has shown improvement toward the end of the school year. Her mother is very involved in her education and holds her accountable. Johnny is a 9 year old boy brought to the emergency room where you are employed as a crisis therapist. The patient was transported by a crisis mobile team who was called by the school. Today’s crisis started when Johnny refused to follow directions regarding an in-class assignment. When the teacher attempted to redirect his behavior things escalated rapidly: Johnny yelled at the teacher, cursed at him using vulgar language, and when the teacher grabbed him by the shoulders to take him to the principal’s office Johnny impulsively stabbed the teacher in the arm with a pencil he was clenching in his hand. Johnny was escorted to the principal’s office who immediately called the police and Johnny’s parents. The police officer was compelled to contact the county crisis hotline who dispatched a crisis mobile team. The crisis clinicians made the determination that Johnny is a danger to others and he must be taken immediately to the nearest emergency room for emergency psychiatric evaluation. Johnny has refused to speak to the ER physician or his nurse.
You gather most of your clinical information from his mother who is at the bedside. Johnny’s mother reports that he has always been a clever, charming, and very playful boy. She informed that for the past year Johnny has been increasingly stubborn, repeatedly challenging his mother’s and his teacher’s authority when compliance with home and/or classroom rules is required. Case study 1:
Brandy is a Caucasian girl, who just celebrated her sixth birthday, and is one of the youngest kids in her
first-grade class. Most of the school year has gone fairly well, but she lately has been having trouble at
school. Last week she disrupted class and threw her pencil across the room.
The teacher explained to the parents that she has been a bit “emotional” lately, but did not know why. Her
mom wondered if it was because she has recently transitioned from graduate school to a new job that
keeps her away from home a bit more than before.
Brandy generally likes school, but gets pulled out once or twice a week for special speech therapy as she
occasionally has some problems with a lisp. Her parents were hesitant about Brandy being pulled out of
class, but when she reported she was getting picked on at school by some classmates, they agreed to the
speech therapy.
At home, she has a supportive family and siblings (younger and older) with whom she gets along well.
Occasionally she will get into trouble for lying, but most often feels pretty badly about it once she is caught.
Her father also has a master’s degree with a full-time job, and she and her siblings attend an after-school
daycare program for a couple hours. She plays with the neighborhood kids and her siblings; however
sometimes Brandy has communication struggles with others due to her lisp. She loves sports, and just
finished playing soccer and is set to start t-ball within the next week or two.
Case study 2:
Brandon is an African-American eight-year-old child in third grade, who is in danger of having to repeat the
grade. He continues to struggle with being able to concentrate in class, and says he is “bored” when
students have to just sit and read; sometimes he talks and walks around the class and other times he draws
pictures and pays no attention at all. He frequently gets sent to the principal’s office for this behavior, but
does not seem to mind because the principal lets him play and gives him snacks (as he always complains
about being hungry). Often the principal compliments him on his artwork.
When his parents were told about his behavior, they were exasperated. The parents said he behaves even
more poorly at home, stealing and breaking his siblings’ things and sneaking food into his room. He even
has nightly bed-wetting accidents on a fairly regular basis (the doctor has ruled out physical problems as a
reason for these).
His mother works a part-time job at a local gas station when the kids are in school. His father used to come
home around dinnertime and was often tired; but he was recently laid off and is depressed and spends a lot
of time in bed.

Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. At present, Dalia’s health is stable with the last serious episode occurring 2 years ago.
Dalia’s parents reported that until middle school, Dalia was an easygoing, good-natured youngster who enjoyed singing and participating in activities with her peers and family. Dalia denied any problems with drugs or alcohol but admitted to drinking with friends. Dalia described her family relationships as tense, stating, “My dad lets me do what I want” and “My mother is always trying to control me.” Dalia described her relationship with her older brother, who lives in another state, as “cool,” and her relationship with her older sister, a college sophomore, as “not cool.”

Lady Ludelyn Dancel was an adopted child who struggled with anger and mistrust issues. Through cognitive forgiveness exercises where she worked to forgive her birth parents for financial difficulties that led to her adoption, her anger diminished. As her trust in her adoptive mother grew, her overreactions in anger decreased. Medication also helped stabilize her mood. Developing a relationship with religious figures like Our Lady provided a sense of protection that reduced fears of abandonment. Ultimately, through forgiveness and support from her adoptive family, Lady was able to resolve her emotional conflicts and feel happy, safe, and content in her situation.

Jennie is 8 years old, the eldest of four children. She lives at home with her mother and siblings in Section 8 housing in a small midwestem city. Her father has been an infrequent part of their lives due to repeated convictions for drug offenses.
Jennie was born prematurely after a difficult pregnancy. Her mother has had the support of a "Mentor Mom" since before Jennie was born. The Mentor Mom program was established in their area to assist young, inexperienced mothers who otherwise would have few supports in caring for their babies. The Mentor Mom's role is similar to that of grandmothers, mothers, and aunts in times when extended families were able to help new parents learn to parent their own children. The Mentor Mom has helped Jennie's mother with child-rearing information and problem-solving support over the years. Jennie frequently spends time with the Mentor Mom at her home in the country. The family client is made up of a father, mother, and their son, a ten-year-old boy. The family is biracial and is made up of four people; father, mother, a ten-year-old son, and a seven-year-old daughter. Initially, they had visited the clinic on a referral basis from the family’s psychiatrist. They had concerns with the behavioral issues their ten-year-old son exhibited while at home as well as at school. The son is currently in fifth grade and attends a public school, the mother runs a local coffee shop in their neighborhood, and the father is a construction worker. The mother was talkative and soon started talking about stressors in life, including their son’s behavioral issues. She states that besides receiving services and extra help her son gets while at school, he is still lagging behind. The exact services had not been explained. The father did not talk much. In fact, he sat away from the family and always displayed a sarcastic grin on his face every time the mother complained. The son was friendly but did not talk much.
After assessments and evaluations, diagnostic evaluations established that the kid had ADHD. In addition to this, the family displayed tendencies of dysfunctional interactions. Once the family unit was mentioned, the mother was quick to state that she believes that there was an issue with the way the whole family functioned. She further suggested that they needed help as a family to understand their situation better as we as know why their son was having behavioral issues. Family therapy was suggested. Everyone but the father readily consented to the suggestion. He later on consented.
Over the past two sessions, the father seemed uncomfortable and hardly participated. He would once in a while tell his wife to shut up when confronted and criticized. The mother always brought up her dissatisfaction with the way her husband lacked warmth and concern for their son’s issues. She felt that the whole burden of raising their kids was on her. She further stated that without him interfering, the son would soon influence their younger daughter, which was already happening. The son spent much of the time stooped over the table due to attention being always on him. He was always silent and uncomfortable.
Interactions between the clients were more complicated than anticipated, and too much time was spent on the interaction between the mother and the therapist. A therapeutic relationship was easily formed between the mother and the therapist. The other members of the family hesitated, with a continual alli.

Roddy is a 15-year-old African American female student with learning disabilities in language arts and math. She loves attention and has had behavioral issues this year, but has shown improvement toward the end of the school year. Her mother is very involved in her education and holds her accountable. In the chart, you note the DSM-5 Parent/Guardian-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure—Child Age 6–17 form completed by the mother (attached). Admission paperwork identifies that Johnny has had numerous visits to the principal’s office in the past year, all triggered by various disruptive behaviors.
Today’s crisis started when Johnny refused to follow directions regarding an in-class assignment. When the teacher attempted to redirect his behavior things escalated rapidly: Johnny yelled at the teacher, cursed at him using vulgar language, and when the teacher grabbed him by the shoulders to take him to the principal’s office Johnny impulsively stabbed the teacher in the arm with a pencil he was clenching in his hand. Johnny was escorted to the principal’s office who immediately called the police and Johnny’s parents. The police officer was compelled to contact the county crisis hotline who dispatched a crisis mobile team. The crisis clinicians made the determination that Johnny is a danger to others and he must be taken immediately to the nearest emergency room for emergency psychiatric evaluation. Johnny has refused to speak to the ER physician or his nurse.
You gather most of your clinical information from his mother who is at the bedside. Johnny’s mother reports that he has always been a clever, charming, and very playful boy. She informed that for the past year Johnny has been increasingly stubborn, repeatedly challenging his mother’s and his teacher’s authority when compliance with home and/or classroom rules is required. Johnny used to be an A+ student. For the past year, however he has been averaging Bs in most subjects, grades that he earned effortlessly.
His mother repeatedly assures you that his drop in grades is not due to lack of intellectual ability but rather because Johnny prefers playing over any type of work. His mother denies any changes in sleep, appetite, or any mood fluctuations. Furthermore, his mom reports that Johnny is a healthy and happy boy who is interested in sports, the outdoors, videogames, and that he wishes to become a software engineer when he grows up. She reports that the school counselor has mentioned that Johnny may be suffering from ADHD or even bipolar disorder. The thought of these diagnoses appear very disturbing to Johnny’s mom. She quickly assures you that she has not observed Johnny to ever struggle with depression, or distractibility, and reports that he has always been a good sleeper. She has a very difficult time interacting with other children and has displayed significant aggressive and assaultive behaviors at school and home. It has been reported that on a few occasions this behavior has resulted in injury to others. These behaviors prevent her from being able to participate in any recreational activities. She attends a school for youth with emotional and behavioral challenges. She struggles academically and has an individual education plan (IEP) that addresses learning and behavioral needs. She has language delays characterized by limited receptive abilities and she is impulsive. Danielle has been diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, and a language-based learning disorder. The school professionals have offered multiple services to help Danielle function better at school. Danielle’s mother describes her daughter as a “terror,” with behavior that is verbally and physically aggressive toward her displayed on a regular basis. She says she has a hard time understanding Danielle’s emotions and feelings. She also notes that Danielle’s brother is afraid of her. Frequently, Danielle doesn’t follow her mother’s directions and is defiant. When she is asked to do something, she refuses and her behavior escalates, becoming aggressive and including the throwing of objects. Danielle’s mother has expressed her concerns about being able to keep Danielle safe at home and has asked about alternative placements. She doesn’t understand why Danielle acts like she does and her discipline is not effective. Her parents are divorced and have a difficult relationship that at times escalates to hostile arguments. When her parents were living together, arguments were constant and there were several incidents of domestic violence during which the police needed to intervene. Prior to the divorce, Danielle’s father was arrested for hitting her mother during an argument in which both children were present. Since then, whenever there are any arguments with lots of yelling, Danielle appears to go into a trance which her mother describes as ‘daydreaming’. During these times, Danielle doesn’t seem to hear or see anything that is happening around her. Danielle’s mother has a history of alcohol abuse and is in recovery, attending meetings. She has been treated for depression for many years and is currently managing her depression with medication. Given her own struggles with her depression and the stress of dealing with Danielle’s behaviors, she has not advocated for additional services at Danielle’s school. For example, even though she attends all meetings, she never challenges the IEP team even when she believes the services in place are not
- 2. working.Both parents are employed and share physical and financial responsible for child care needs. Danielle’s relationship with her father is strong; they appear very connected. At this time, he is not able to care for her full-time because of his job as a long distance truck driver. Danielle’s father reports that when she is with him, Danielle does well. He acknowledges that his daughter is challenging due to her delays, but reports being able to manage her behaviors. He frequently goes to therapy with Danielle but is not always sure how to participate. Her therapist reports that Danielle has offered some ideas for her treatment plan and that her father is supportive but needs support himself. She like spending time with her father because they do various art projects together. She reports that doing art makes her feel better and relaxed. She hopes to be a professional artist when she grows up.
