A thematic analysis of policy for Canadian federal and provincial broadband programs operating from 1994 to present to determine the change in objectives over time and the coherence between objectives at the Federal and Provincial levels.
The project involves complex development of the territory with total area of 316.1 hectares and includes the construction of multi-apartment residential blocks as well as shopping, leisure and other commercial objects with public infrastructures.
Satisfaction surveys have increasingly been used as a proxy for student learning in higher education, for example in the UK’s teaching excellence framework. However, in this keynote I will critically discuss this practice using OU data on 111,256 students on 151 different modules. Significantly higher student satisfaction was found in modules in which students received large amounts of learning materials and worked through them individually, than in courses where students had to collaborate and work together. However, the best predictor for whether students actually passed the module was whether there were collaborative learning activities, such as discussion forums and online tuition sessions. In fact, no relations were found between student satisfaction scores and academic performance in those modules. Therefore, during the keynote I will discuss whether or not we should actually listen to students’ feedback, and if yes which students’ voices we should adhere to.

Course revision is a reality of daily life in higher education. Each semester, faculty review their courses to ensure that they are presenting current concepts and providing proper methods of assessment and interaction for their students. Unfortunately, most review and revision is done during periods of frantic activity just before or during the beginning of the semester. This methodology does not allow for deep consideration of issues and can negatively affect learning for students.
Focused revision is a methodology of review that tasks faculty to review a course over a longer period of time and focus on one pedagogical aspect, such as interaction, content presentation, rubric development, etc. Focusing on a specific aspect of a course, to the exclusion of others, increases the efficacy of that aspect of the course while maintaining the current level of quality on the other aspects. This methodology also changes course revision from a summative process to a formative process and allows for the effective inclusion of student feedback into course design. The process also allows faculty to create efficiencies in their process to maximize time and minimize work. Multiple focused revisions may build on each other to create a synergy between course components, thus creating a more effective learning environment in both the physical and the digital classrooms, leading to increased student engagement and learning.

Committed to providing a supportive and safe educational environment that fosters student engagement and success, James Cook University (JCU) has taken a proactive approach to the use of data in a dual-pronged approach to improve the student experience and curriculum design. Blackboard Analytics for Learn is a key tool within these initiatives. Analytics for Learn provides real-time data that can be used by staff in a variety of roles to support student success. This presentation will outline how JCU is adapting Analytics for Learn, including discussion of initial customisations made to 'out-of-the-box' reports and the development of personalised dashboards, as well as providing an overview of the coordinated approach to the staged 'roll-out' and adoption of reports and dashboards.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

To give you some brief information about our working model:
We operate on a 2-way hub and spoke model.
The Hub – the hub is the central LI team – responsible for the pedagogical application of Moodle and learning technologies - that sits within the wider department of Learning and Research Technologies – who build MMU’s Core+ managed learning environment
The Spoke – the 8 TELAs that work within each of the 8 faculties.
In this way we can work centrally to ensure consistency and then cascade to each faculty and adapt to meet the individual needs of each faculty. In the same way we can bring back good practice and lessons learned from each faculty back to the centre so that this can inform practice in other faculties. So interesting things happening at the centre can be disseminated out and interesting things brought back in.
