Montessori and DAP both emphasize independent, hands-on learning and play. In Montessori classrooms, children freely explore materials that interest them, while learning at their own pace in a peaceful environment. Similarly, Developmentally Appropriate Practice is based on how children naturally develop and learn, such as through play, at different rates. Both methods expect children to be continually challenged as they master new concepts.

2. What is Montessori?
• Montessori is an educational method that is based on independent
hands-on activities and free play.
• In Montessori classrooms, children are allowed to explore the
classroom and work on activities that spark their interest.

• Montessori classrooms are peaceful and quiet learning environments.
• The classrooms are child oriented, not teacher based.
• Children are taught to self-regulate.

• Developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) is an approach to teaching
based on research on how young children develop and learn.
• There are 12 Principles of Child Development and Learning.

7. Similarities
• One important principle of both programs would be the understanding that
children learn and develop at different rates.
• Another important similarity is the importance of play. Play is an important
part of developing language, social skills and cognition.
• Both programs expect the children to be challenged, when one concept is
achieved they are encouraged to continue to grow.
• Both practices understand that children learn in a variety of ways.
