5. The Railroad
• In 1895 there was a railroad station
constructed.
• This allowed people from other places like
New York City to visit Montauk more
conveniently.
• President McKinley arrived in Montauk via
train in 1898 shortly after the Rough Riders
landed.

6. Spanish American War
• In August, 1898 the Rough Riders, which
contained about 29,0000 troops led by
Theodore Roosevelt.
• They stayed at a place called Camp Wikoff
• Some were ill with malaria and yellow fever.

7. The World Wars
• Montauk was seen to be a possible target
invasion point.
• There was a fort named Fort Hero and was an
army base
• During WWII the fort became Camp Hero and
made into an Air Force Station.
• Camp Hero was a place were the U.S.A. military
often tested torpedoes.
• They Navy had a base located on the shore as
well.
