How Headlines Led to War
T H E S P A N I S H A M E R I C A N W A R
Spanish Control in Cuba
• Cuba had been under Spanish rule since
the late 15th century, and they finally
revolted for independence in 1868 and
later in 1895.
• After these failed revolts, Spain created
detention or reconcentration camps.
- over 200,000 Cubans died in the camps
-
United States Sympathy and Involvement
• Americans were sympathetic for Cuban’s fight for
independence because of the parallels to America’s
struggle for independence from Britain.
• Close geographically
• Economic Investments:
- American people invested in sugar and rice plantations,
creation of railroads, and lucrative iron mines.
Influence of
Newspapers
• Even though Presidents Cleveland
and McKinley would not intervene,
US newspapers published by
Joseph Pulitzer and William
Randolph Hearst encouraged
American citizens so much, they
started to call for War.
Yellow Journalism
• style of reporting and
displaying news in a
sensational, eye-catching
way
• way of increasing sales
and attracting attention
Explosion of USS Maine
• The USS Maine was stationed along the eastern
coast of the United States and in the Caribbean.
• January of 1898, the USS Maine was sent to
Havana, Cuba.
• On February 15, 1898, a massive explosion sunk
the ship and killed most of the crew.
Cry for War After the Explosion of USS Maine
• Americans blamed Spain for the
explosion.
• The slogan “Remember the Maine”
became a headliner and battle cry
throughout the United States.
• Newspapers blamed a Spanish mine.
Importance of Newspapers
United States Government did not want to go to war with
Spain.
Because of the newspapers circulating with attention-
grabbing headlines, enough support was raised.
How can newspapers effect public opinion?
What really happened to the USS Maine?
• In 1974, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover and a team of historians, archivists, and
Navy experts decided to examine the true causes of the explosion.
report-what-really-sank-
maine#:~:text=The%20Hansen%2DPrice%20analysis%2C%20as,with%20an%2
0internal%20explosion%20alone.
Discussion Questions:
How can newspapers influence public opinion?
What are the consequences of publishers not having every piece of
information or even correct information?
What are the pros and cons of yellow journalism?
What potential biases did the newspaper journalists have when they
wrote about the explosion?
