More and more independent developers are creating this sort of games specifically for smartphones and tablets, taking advantage of the new opportunities offered by touch screens – in this talk we're looking at some of the most successful and interesting examples.
I gave this talk on July 20 2013 during Republika Fest in Rijeka, Croatia, as part of the A MAZE. Indie Pop-Up event, where I also curated a small exhibition of local multiplayer games for touch screen devices. For the occasion I launched www.localmultiplayer.com – a website with resources about this specific kind of games.
This document summarizes a study on casual games conducted by researchers from the University of Tampere. The study examined definitions and discussions around casual games, analyzed over 60 casual games, and surveyed casual game players. Key findings included the wide range of meanings associated with "casual", differences between casual game players and hardcore gamers, and the potential future of casual multiplayer mobile games. The researchers concluded that designing casual game experiences requires considering many related factors beyond just gameplay.

This document discusses a presentation proposal about harnessing cognitive biases to motivate positive behavior. The presentation will discuss how social cognitive biases like awe, herd instinct, Hawthorne effect, and reactance can be used by designers to encourage task completion and prosocial actions. It will describe a design investigation into these biases and prototypes that motivate behavior. Guidelines for other designers will be proposed, considering elements of lasting behavior change. Examples of successful and less successful real-world instances of cognitive bias design will also be examined, such as a soda ban versus grocery bag donations.

Pedestrian Play: An Investigation of Public Games for Adultsallisonvleach
For my 3D Interaction class, I went out and investigated the world of game design. From interviews with indoor and outdoor game experts and developers, I harnessed a clear understanding of what design principles and design requirements are meaningful in the creation of an indie folk game.
This is a project I made for my Interaction Theory class in April 2012.
My challenge was to tell a personal story using abstract frameworks. I chose to share my experience of frequently changing career interests over my life. To tell this tale, I employed the following framework categories: elemental, temporal, relational, modal and attitudinal.
In fall 2011, my Design Research classmates Janette Song, Bill Rihn, Lisa Woods and I were presented with the task of investigating how people navigate using cues from the natural world.
Acting as the research firm Calicocho with Garmin as our prospective client, we spent the semester conducting in-depth studies on navigation - from behavioral research, navigation intercept interviews in the field, conversations with industry experts, to qualitative interviews with both GPS users and abstainers.
