There are two main types of computer monitors: liquid crystal display (LCD) and cathode ray tube (CRT). LCD monitors use a backlight that passes through liquid crystals and color filters to display an image, while CRT monitors use an electron gun to fire electrons at red, green, and blue phosphor dots on the screen. Both have advantages - LCD monitors use less power and are smaller/lighter, while CRT monitors are less expensive and have better color representation.

5. How LCDs work
1. Light is emitted from backlight
2. The light gets polarized then passes through glass substrate
3. When the light passes through the liquid crystal it either is
either blocked or allowed to go through
4. Light that passes through the liquid crystal then passes
through the color filter
5. Light goes through another polarizer and glass substrate
