Language, Speech and Communication Skills
I have chosen the language, speech and communication outcome adaptation as I
believe that language, speech and communication is important in any persons’ life.
Frustration can set in and many other needs cannot be met because of this.
Monique has strengths in comprehension and listening as well as memory skills. These
strengths can assist Monique to overcome her other challenges in language.
Monique has social skills and she loves attending sporting events.
Without the necessary language and communication skills, Monique will not be able to
interact socially as she wants to.
Adaptations to Monique’s learning outcome: Songs,
Rhymes & Games
• Monique has understanding of language but
adaptations are needed to enhance her
speech and vocabulary. Students are more
willing to communicate when things or
activities are of interest to them. Monique
loves to hum at tunes. Songs and rhymes
can meet that need and words with their
meanings can be learned.
• Students love choice-making. Including
different games that she can choose from by
indicating the one she prefers as this can
increase her interest in learning.
Adaptations to Monique’s outcomes: Fun Activities
(Butchart, 2015)
• Fun activities are necessary to stimulate completion
and interest in tasks given.
• Using colorful applications and games that have multi-
user ability, increases the fun for the student.
• Games that have a reward at the end of each section,
encourages the student to complete the section at the
best of their ability.
• Students are likely to communicate when they need the
help of another student or assistant.
• Another student or assistant can join in the fun of
playing an online game or participating in the skipping
class that Monique enjoys participating in. This will give
Monique a sense of belonging.
• Games that are humorous, such as Mr. Bean: Flying
teddy, will enhance Monique’s learning, as she loves
humor.
Speech and Language Outcome adaptation by using I-Pad
applications
Outcome adapted
 Include music, songs and rhymes in her
expressive language (speaking), Sing &
Spell I-pad application.
 Include pictures, games, songs and
rhymes about horses and dogs for her
receptive (decoding) language skills. All
in one Activity Center I-pad application
 Language Games and activities – 8th
grade Language Arts I-pad application.
Why adapted
 Monique has a good memory and loves
humming to music. Her vocabulary will
be increased by memorizing new words.
 Monique loves animals, especially dogs
and horses. This will encourage her to
focus on learning and minimize
distraction.
 This can enhance Monique’s speech and
language where there are still
challenges.
Examples of I-pad applications (available on ITunes)
Old Macdonald Had a Farm Full Version - All In One activity
center and full interactive sing along book for children
More classroom adaptations to Monique’s Speech and Language
adaptations
Outcome adapted Why adapted
• Extend time limits
• Allowance of more frequent breaks
• Providing a touch screen device such
as an I-pad
• Providing of visual materials
• Monique will need extra time to complete a
specific task because she will need extra time
for processing.
• Due to Monique’s physical disabilities, her body
can get tired very easily.
• Monique will need an I-pad or any other touch
screen device to have access to the songs and
games suggested.
• Monique strengths are visual awareness skills
and visual information skills. Visual material will
enhance the understanding of words and help to
expand her vocabulary.
Goals for Monique to reach within the next 12 months
(Taylor, 2015)
A speech therapist will evaluate and then set goals for Monique for
implementation in the IEP. The teacher and SEA will assist as required
so that goals are reached.

something such as body parts for the first month.

places etc. She must then try to comment on these pictures for
example:
