Monarch butterflies undertake one of the longest insect migrations in the world. A male monarch butterfly traveled the longest recorded migration distance of 2880 miles from Ontario, Canada to Austin, Texas. Monarch butterflies go through multiple generations each year, with the migrating generation living 6-8 months to travel south for the winter and return north in the spring.
