Monarchs go through four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. As larvae, they molt five times before forming a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar transforms into an adult butterfly. Adult monarchs have black veins that help them glide and migrate. Each fall, monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles from the northern United States and Canada to spend the winter in central Mexico, returning north in the spring to lay eggs and repeat their life cycle.
