Introduction:
This module introduces students to the basic concepts, procedures, and techniques used in the
Dissertation. This module begins with a brief over view of how the researcher/ designer start
the work. In this module student will be provided a general background based on which
participant students would select and develop their specific research methodology in
consultation with their respective supervisors.
The choice of topic will be at the students’ discretion, but subject to guidance from
Supervisor. Students will be asked to select a particular topic for research and particular field
of research method related to some aspect of Interior Design preferably closely related to their
topic for their exhibition, prepare and submit a proposal for their Dissertation.
From and through the work undertaken within the context of the unit, the student is expecting
to develop sufficient material to establish a focussed thesis proposition. This may take a
variety of forms, for example the student might extend a particular area of interest or,
alternatively, establish and clarify aspects of the wider context of the field of study. Dedicated
to the development of conceptual and analytical skills for the independent self-initiated
interior design research project which will end with a researched, illustrated and fully
referenced dissertation of approximately 10,000 words, supported by graphic, photographic
and other evidence, showing the essential nature of the work, achieving a sustained level of
intellectual analysis to demonstrate problem solving in a professional and commercially
viable manner. Each student will be assigned a thesis supervisor as an advisor and mentor,
and they will meet on a weekly basis to discuss project planning, control and execution. The
students will further develop research techniques and use their intellectual and creative skills
to solve their individual industry-based problems. In the Practice module, students continue
their investigation into a particular personal area of study, leading to a final assessed
presentation. The aim is to enable students to position themselves intellectually and creatively
within the contemporary discourse on the design of interiors targeting ultimately to produce a
Thesis.
The thesis could take the form of a DISSERTATION/ ILLUSTRATED WRITTEN
DOCUMENT or AN EXTENDED DESIGN PROJECT, suitably documented. This will
support and assist the student in the development and preparation of their research into a
comprehensive written document that will complement the visual work to be undertaken.
Student may choose to submit a written Dissertation or a Design Project as his/her major
project. It is the responsibility of the student to determine/ choose/ or formulate a research

problem under the guidance of a thesis supervisor or a design tutor. In each case, the topic
titles will be approved by the Course Project Sub-Committee (or Masters Module Team) with
in 15th week prior to students starting their research work in the following semester
Aims and Objectives:
Aims
Everywhere our knowledge is incomplete and problems are waiting to be solved. We address
the void in our knowledge, and those unresolved problems, by asking relevant questions and
seeking answers to them. The role of research is to provide a method for obtaining those
answers by inquiringly studying the facts, within the parameters of the scientific method.

The aim of this module is to extend the theoretical knowledge as well as the technical
considerations to construct a viable dissertation. Student will experience a variety of practical
lesson, and conceptual issues to address a problem. They will select and formulate of a
research problem because: “The formulation of a problem is often more essential than its
solution” (A. Einstein and L. Infeld)
Objectives
The specific objectives of a systematic inquiry in preparation of the Thesis (Dissertation) are:
 a inclusive understanding of the background knowledge of the proposal in
comprehending and appreciating the proposal’s local/international importance;
 a literature review to develop an in-depth exploration on that specific field.
 to enable the student to produce a comprehensive Interior project of professional
standard
In groundwork of the Thesis (Dissertation), students are required to obtain capability in:
 fundamentals of objective inquiry, information compilation and processing,
investigation and synthesis
 fundamentals of communiqué and presentation
 fundamentals of standard format of writing
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be familiar with research procedure and the
knowledge about the contemporary design method, able to produce an extended, fully
illustrated, professionally produced Dissertation with fully acknowledged sources, references
and bibliography. In the second option design based research work will be produced which
will help the student to fabricate a comprehensive Interior Design project of professional
standard.

Teaching and Learning methods include:
DISSERTATION/ ILLUSTRATED WRITTEN DOCUMENT
Dissertation begins with a series of lecture which introduces about research, different types of
research methodologies; their use in practice and relationship to methods from other subject
fields, assisting the student in formulation of research problem. They will have a brief
overview of how the researcher/ designer start the work. In this module student will be
provided a general background based on which participant students would select and develop
their specific research methodology in consultation with their respective supervisors.
Each student will be assigned a project supervisor as an advisor and mentor, and they will
meet on a weekly basis to discuss project planning, control and execution. The students will
further develop research techniques and use their intellectual and creative skills to solve their
individual industry-based problems.
A project set out through a written brief; site or project related visits; interviews relevant
personnel involved in project or related issues; reference to primary and secondary sources of
material; workshops on appropriate research methods.
Developing the project through tutorials, seminars, and presentations and interviewing the
subject specialists. Collecting and testing data and developing prototypical design models
using an appropriate range of media and techniques. Finally a presentation will be prepared
that documents the research aims, methods and results. This incorporates the themes, strategic
aims and research criteria for the ensuing thesis module.
Steps to follow for the THESIS (Dissertation):
Each student will be assigned a project supervisor as an advisor and mentor, and they will
meet at least on a weekly basis to discuss project planning, control and execution. The
students will further develop research techniques and use their intellectual and creative skills
to solve their individual industry-based problems.
 Each student proposes and finalizes a field/sector according to his or her choice
 Discovering a concrete problem on this particular field which is in need of solution
 He or she goes through in a methodical and systematic investigation to develop a
knowledge base and find out relevancy of the proposal as M A thesis
 Students will prepare a short power point presentation ( 15-20 min maxm / maxm at least
40 slides) of there systematic investigation on the proposed problem with all supporting
documents which will be prepared to be presented to the expertise of the relevant field
 Finally a Dissertation will be produce which prioritizes issues, organizes thoughts and
concretizes ideas
Assessment Strategy
Module assessment will be based on presentation (phase 1) and Dissertation (Phase 2) with
fully acknowledged sources, references and bibliography.

1. Presentation will demonstrate through appropriate modes of documentationa) identification
of a specific field of research which is in need of solution
b) systematic collection and collation of primary and secondary data relevant to the field of
research;
c) development of a well informed research methodology or methodologies through the
systematic use of a set/s of techniques for data gathering, analysis and progressive testing
against results;
2. A written documents of approximately 10000 words which establishes the strategies, scope
and evaluation criteria for the Thesis,

THESIS (Design Project)
This module, carried out within the context of a design unit, develops design skills and
understanding along with an ability to critically engage in design research. The three
components under the Title ‘Project’ will correlate the theories; hypothesis and conclusion/s.
The theory underpinning the proposition may be derived from the wide variety of sources that
impinge on the design of interiors. The development and final format of the design thesis
should be appropriate to the theoretical proposition and be understood as part of the design
issue.
Realization of the thesis project includes schematic design to detailing and must demonstrate
the students’ understanding of the historical, technological and aesthetic parameters of interior
design. Students must demonstrate independence in relationship to their own design process
and ability to realize an interior design project. This module develops the themes of the year's
design projects into a design thesis within the program.
Aims and Objectives:
The module aims to equip students for postgraduate level study in design through the
development of their skills, understanding and ability in design research. The underlying aim
is to raise students’ awareness and expectations of design research by improving the quality of
the process with reference to similar processes in other disciplines. In parallel students will
develop their understanding of the unique aspects of design research in relation to the specific
issues encountered in the built environment. This background will enable students to critically
select and carry out appropriate forms of research in developing well-informed design models.
The module will also emphasize the function of dissemination in research and encourage high
standards of documentation. The module is based in studio with the principal themes and
issues being introduced through a seminar programme in the first term, attendance of which is
a requirement of the course.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

a) identify and work within a field of research appropriate to a given design problem that
identifies the key cultural, environmental, technological, historical or theoretical
issues;
b) identify and assemble the data required from primary and/or secondary sources in
order to analyse the selected set of design issues systematically and in depth;
c) develop and apply a consistent research methodology or methodologies with reference
to appropriate methodological precedents and techniques;
d) develop prototypical design models that interpret research material through testing and
demonstrating results;
e) collate, document and present research material to an appropriate standard.
f) produce a concise, written, illustrated abstract which establishes the key themes of the
thesis proposition, beyond the studio design project.
g) be familiar with research procedure, and the knowledge about the contemporary design method.
Assessment Strategy
Module assessment will be based on the presentation of two associated pieces of work:
1. a Portfolio which will demonstrate through appropriate modes of documentation:
a) identification of a specific field of research through analysis of key design issues involved
in a set project;
b) systematic collection and collation of primary and secondary data relevant to the field of
research;
c) development of a well informed research methodology or methodologies through the
systematic use of a set/s of techniques for data gathering, analysis and progressive testing
against results;
d) analysis and valid interpretation of results through the development of design models with
reference to appropriate precedents;
e) presentation of design research to proto-publishing or exhibition standard
2. A written abstract of approximately 1000 words which establishes the strategies, scope and
evaluation criteria for the Thesis, of which this is a pre-requisite.
Work will be evaluated in each of the assessment instruments against the following criteria:

 quality of analysis and interpretation
 quality of documentation
Modes of documentation for the portfolio submission may include: drawings; photographic
material; multi-media material; quantitative data; qualitative data; 3D models or prototypes;
web-based material. All 3D and multi-media work should be recorded in graphic form and
explained to a standard suitable for assessment purposes.
Presentation
Portfolio - This module serves to draw together the various aspects of students’ work to
provide evidence of a coherent and presentable portfolio of work which is of a standard
acceptable to a commercial employer. This Module provides the opportunity for interior
design students to develop a professional working portfolio. Emphasis is placed upon
organizing a strong body of work, focused on a specific area of expertise dictated by the
student’s individual career goals. Presentation options are explored, examined, and executed
which is important to launch an interior design consultancy. The Portfolio will be
comprehensive, fully illustrated, portfolio of self-determine design content that demonstrates
creative and strategic thinking. The contents should show the entire design process from the
design brief, conception to final working drawings and costed manufacturing brief. The
assessment of this module will use generic criteria as follows – Creative, Technical, and
Professional.
Presentation of Range/Collection/ Interior Schemes– Different methods of display; co-
ordination of accessories; presentation and exhibition.
