Are you a developer or designer aspiring to become an architect? Do you want to learn about the architecture of open source applications? Do you want to learn software architecture through case studies and examples? If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, this workshop is certainly for you. This workshop will introduce you to key topics in software architecture including architectural principles, constraints, non-functional requirements (NFRs), architectural styles and design patterns, viewpoints and perspectives, and architecture tools. A special feature of this workshop: it covers examples and case studies from open source applications. What’s more, you’ll also get exposed to some free or open source tools used by practicing software architects.

Congressional PageRank: Graph Analytics of US Congress With Neo4jWilliam Lyon
Interactions among members of any large organization are naturally a graph, yet the tools we use to analyze data about these organizations often ignore the graphiness of the domain and instead map the data into structures (such as relational databases) that make taking advantage of the relationships in the data much more difficult when it comes time for analysis. Collaboration networks are a perfect example. This talk will focus on analyzing one of the most powerful collaboration networks in the world, the US Congress. We will show how to model US Congressional data (legislators, bills, committees and the interactions among them) as a graph, how to import the data into the Neo4j graph database and how to write ad-hoc queries to answer simple questions such as “What are the topics of bills referred to committees on which California House Representatives serve?”. We will then see how we can combine a graph processing engine (Apache Spark) with Neo4j to run graph algorithms like PageRank on our data stored in Neo4j. This will allow us to identify influential legislators in the network and the topics over which they exert influence. This talk will touch on topics related to graph data modeling, graph databases, graph processing, and social network analysis that can be applied to many different domains.

R is a programming language and environment commonly used in statistical computing, data analytics and scientific research.
It is one of the most popular languages used by statisticians, data analysts, researchers and marketers to retrieve, clean, analyze, visualize and present data.
Due to its expressive syntax and easy-to-use interface, it has grown in popularity in recent years.

Social networks are not new, even though websites like Facebook and Twitter might make you want to believe they are; and trust me- I’m not talking about Myspace! Social networks are extremely interesting models for human behavior, whose study dates back to the early twentieth century. However, because of those websites, data scientists have access to much more data than the anthropologists who studied the networks of tribes!
Because networks take a relationship-centered view of the world, the data structures that we will analyze model real world behaviors and community. Through a suite of algorithms derived from mathematical Graph theory we are able to compute and predict behavior of individuals and communities through these types of analyses. Clearly this has a number of practical applications from recommendation to law enforcement to election prediction, and more.
This presentation begins with a motivating example for why R-packages (and Bioconductor packages in particular) are relevant to modern bioinformaticians and then goes through a step-by-step 'tour' of basic package components. Almost everything can be done using refactoring tools:
* How to get buy-in for refactoring? (use Technical Debt quantification tools)
* How to identify refactoring candidates? (use smell detection tools)
* How to prioritize / identify what to refactor first? (use reports from design analysis tools)
* How do I identify dependencies and evaluate impact of refactoring? (use visulization tools)
* How to I actually perform refactoring? (Use IDE support for automated refactoring and use them!)
Deriving from a rich experience in using tools for refactoring in real-world projects, this talk takes you through a whirl-wind tour of refactoring tools (of course for Java). What's more, this talk includes quick demos of some of these tools so you can see them in action.

I have been fortunate to have worked with some geeks with incredible coding skills. I felt amazed at how they can play games with compilers, perform magic with their incantations on the shell, and solve some insanely complex algorithm problems with ease. I naively assumed that they are going to achieve greatness in near future. Alas, I was wrong. Really wrong. [Read the rest of the article ... ]

Awareness of design smells - Design comes before code. A care at design level can solve lot of problems.
Indicators of common design problems - helps developers or software engineers understand mistakes made while designing and apply design principles for creating high-quality designs. This presentation provides insights gained from performing refactoring in real-world projects to improve refactoring and reduce the time and costs of managing software projects. The talk also presents insightful anecdotes and case studies drawn from the trenches of real-world projects. By attending this talk, you will know pragmatic techniques for refactoring design smells to manage technical debt and to create and maintain high-quality software in practice. All the examples in this talk are in Java.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

SOCRadar Research Team: Latest Activities of IntelBrokerSOCRadar
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. To track such hacker activities on dark web sources like hacker forums, private Telegram channels, and other hidden platforms where cyber threats often originate, you can check SOCRadar’s Dark Web News.
