This document proposes improvements to domain-specific term extraction for ontology construction. It discusses issues with existing term extraction approaches and presents a new method that selects and organizes target and contrastive corpora. Terms are extracted using linguistic rules on part-of-speech tagged text. Statistical distributions are calculated to identify terms based on their frequency across multiple contrastive corpora. The approach achieves better precision in extracting simple and complex terms for computer science and biomedical domains compared to existing methods.

Object‐oriented software development is an evolutionary process, and hence the opportunities for integration are abundant. Conceptually, classes are encapsulation of data attributes and their associated functions. Software components are amalgamation of logically and/or physically related classes. A complete software system is also an aggregation of software components. All of these various integration levels warrant contemporary integration techniques. Traditional integration techniques towards the end of software development process do not suffice any more. Integration strategies are needed at class level, component level, sub‐system level, and system levels. Classes require integration of methods. Various types of class interaction mechanisms demand different testing strategies. Integration of classes into components presses its own integration requirements. Finally, the system integration demands different types of integration testing strategies.

Spam filtering poses a critical problem in text categorization as the features of text is continuously changing. Spam evolves continuously and makes it difficult for the filter to classify the evolving and evading new feature patterns. Most practical applications are based on online user feedback, the task calls for fast, incremental and robust learning algorithms. This paper presents a system for automatically detection and filtering of unsolicited electronic messages. In this paper, we have developed a content-based classifier, which uses two topic models LSI and PLSA complemented with a text patternmatching based natural language approach. By combining these powerful statistical and NLP techniques we obtained a parallel content based Spam filter, which performs the filtration in two stages. In the first stage each model generates its individual predictions, which are combined by a voting mechanism as the second stage.

Recommendation system using collaborative deep learning

Collaborative filtering (CF) is a successful approach commonly used by many recommender systems. Conventional CF-based methods use the ratings given to items by users as the sole source of information for learning to make recommendation. However, the ratings are often very sparse in many applications, causing CF-based methods to degrade significantly in their recommendation performance. To address this sparsity problem, auxiliary information such as item content information may be utilized. Collaborative topic regression (CTR) is an appealing recent method taking this approach which tightly couples the two components that learn from two different sources of information. Nevertheless, the latent representation learned by CTR may not be very effective when the auxiliary information is very sparse. To address this problem, we generalize recent advances in deep learning from i.i.d. input to non-i.i.d. (CF-based) input and propose in this paper a hierarchical Bayesian model called collaborative deep learning (CDL), which jointly performs deep representation learning for the content information and collaborative filtering for the ratings (feedback) matrix. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets from different domains show that CDL can significantly advance the state of the art.

More specifically, it addresses the placement problem in informal learning settings in which there is no clear and structured information on the individual learning resources available, a scenario that is in increasing demand in professional learning
In our state of the art analysis we have seen that LSA is on the one hand successfully used in several educational applications but on the other hand most implementations work with much larger text corpora as we expect to have in learning networks. Another constraint for our experiment was that most of the experiments are done the englisch text corpora. Since we were planning to develop we-services for the learning environments of the Open University of the Netherlands we have used Dutch text corpora For this purpose we first did a methodological study to see if LSA can discriminate between similar and dissimilar documents.
After a review of existing solution we have developed a web-service around several LSA libraries. This web-service can import documents, preprocess them with weighting, stopwords etc., execute the SVD and finally query document to document comparison.
In the TENCompetence project we have developed a so call hybrid personalization prototype. This prototype combines so called “top-down”-approaches using metadata/ontologies with “bottom-up”methods like LSA and collaborative filtering.
