2. Modern Language Association
(MLA)
The Modern Language Association’s writing
style is the leading means of
documentation in the educational and literary
world. The current MLA writing manual is the
sixth edition. A new manual has been
published about once every decade over the
approximately fifty years of MLA style’s
existence.
3. When is MLA used?
The MLA writing style is often used by writers
who are not required to use a particular
writing style.
4. How is MLA different?
The MLA style focuses on citing information
about the author of a research source. Who
created a source is more significant than
when it was published
5. MLA PAGE FORMAT
–12 point font
–Times New Roman
–Double Spaced with 1” margins
–Include the page number & your last name in the
header in the top right corner of every page.
–In the top left corner, include on separate lines:
your name, the teacher’s name, the class name,
the date
–Include the title on the next line, centered
–Indent every paragraph 1 tab
–NO extra spaces
6. MLA Sample First Page
•MLA format does not require a
title page.
•On the first page, the student
includes a heading (name,
professor, course number and
date). The first page heading
begins on the first line of text
(not the header) and is double
spaced.
•The title appears centered in
plain text after the first page
heading.
•The header contains only the
student’s last name and page
number.
7. American Psychological
Association (APA)
The American Psychological Association (APA)
style is the preferred means of
citing resources in the social sciences circle. The
APA writing manual is in its 5th edition
and is newer than the MLA writing style.
8. When is APA used?
APA style is used when writing a psychological
paper or any social sciences
paper. It is a helpful style when most sources
are from published journals, articles, and
frequently published works.
9. How is APA different?
APA references focus on the date and title of a
research source instead of the
author. This is because one author or journal
can have three similar articles, as well as
because scientific information changes.
10. APA PAGE FORMAT
12 point font
, Times New Roman, 1” margins, Double-spaced
The first page should be your title page
–Include a header that has a shortened version of your
title on the left top and your page number on the right
top.
–Put your full title, name, and college on separate
lines centered in the middle of the paper.
–If wanted, include an author’s note at the bottom
including your class and teacher. (not required)
11. APA Page Format Cont…

–Includes the same header as the first page
–Says Abstract at the top center of your page
–Indent your paragraph 1 tab
•The third page starts your essay
–Full title centered at top of page
–Begin 1stparagraph –first line indented 1 tab
12. An Example of an APA Title Page
•The header includes the running
head (formatted as the following:
Running head: TITLE OF ESSAY)
against the left margin and the page
number against the right margin.
•The title of the essay, your name,
and the university name should
appear centered, double spaced,
and on the top half of the page.
•All text should be in 12 pt. Times
New Roman font and should not be
bolded.
•Author’s note (optional) contains
contact information and
acknowledgements and should be
placed at the bottom half of essay.
13. APA
Subsequent Page headers
On each page after
the title page, APA
requires that the
title appear in all
caps on the left and
the page number
appears on the
right.
MLA format uses
the same header
(last name
followed by page
number in the
right corner) for
ever y page
