The document discusses the advantages and disadvantages of mobile web applications versus native mobile apps. It notes that while apps provide richer experiences, the mobile web works across all devices without installation and offers lower development costs. Both approaches will likely be important strategies for the future as mobile devices become the primary computing platform.
Adapting designs to function on the dizzying array of mobile devices is one of the most challenging tasks facing web designers these days. This presentation (originally given to a group of app developers and mobile geeks in the Twin Cities) tries to identify the major "pain points" and provide solutions.

Why Content Marketers Should Double Down on Facebook in 2015Brian Honigman
If you're not actively investing in Facebook in 2015, now is the time to start allocating more of your content marketing budget to the social network. With a strong foothold in mobile and video, not to mention their future plans with Internet.org and Oculus, Facebook has positioned itself to be a major contenter for year to come.
Tools & Tips to Optimize Mobile WebsitesLinda Nguyen
As the majority of all global web traffic continues to stem from mobile devices, more importance is placed onto responsive mobile design to optimize websites.
In this workshop we see how easy is to develop a native Android app for TV using Amazon Fire App Builder and how to connect to a media streaming service using media feeds.

On April 21, 2015, sites which do not meet Google’s mobile-friendly criteria will be demoted in mobile search results. Google has warned it will have a “significant impact” on mobile searches worldwide.
What’s equally important to keep in mind, however, is that while ‘mobilegeddon’ is the most significant update to Google’s mobile algorithm thus far, it will by no means be the last.

Why marketers should care about mobile marketing now. Includes statistics on mobile device proliferation, responsive website design, mobile websites vs. mobile apps, and how the market will continue to change.
Presentation given at Interact13 conference in January 2013, Springfield Ohio.
Are you a Sitecore developer with no experience with mobile development? Neither did Pieter while writing this synopsis. Join Pieter in his quest to become a mobile Go Go starting from a Mobile No No.
He will share his expectations and lessons learned of mobile development. Focussing on the why mobile development matters and the different technologies that are available. Ending with and introduction of the Sitecore mobile SDK and Xamarin.
This presentation from the Online Information 2013 conference in London, uses the medium of Lolcat to present an overview of the various adaptation methods mobile websites use. Brand head-to-head comparisons include EasyJet vs Ryanair, and Apple vs Microsoft, and four way competitions in the news, charity, and retail sectors.
The presentation makes a data-driven case that pure Responsive Design, while marketed as a silver bullet and undeniably attractive enough as a development method to get its own textbooks, slows sites down and results in a poor user experience. It also presents evidence that detection of a user's hardware type presents useful actionable intelligence about the user before a byte is served.
Your boss has an iPhone, so of course he wants an app. But does an app really make business sense? Or is a responsive design website enough?
And with hundreds of thousands of apps out there, what will make people choose and use yours? What makes a good mobile user interface? And how can you make sure your company actually delivers one?
Responsive design might make sense if you've got a content driven website. But how should your web team work together when every web page they are making needs to work at any width and resolution? And can you get the content under control to make pages that really make sense on small screens and big ones?

Are Websites Optimized for Mobile Devices and Smart TVs ?Manos Perakakis
Full text: http://bit.do/optimizedwebtv
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adaptation of some of the world’s most popular websites to the “post-pc era” of using multiple devices for accessing the web. Up till recently the PC used to be the only device used for accessing the WWW. This has changed dramatically over the past few years with the introduction of many powerful Internet-connected devices such as Smart Phones, Tablets and Smart TVs. Due to the many differences between these devices in terms of screen size,
hardware power, input methods etc. in most cases a PC-optimized website is not optimally viewed in these devices,
resulting in poor usability and User Experience. In this survey 49
of the world’s most visited websites, according to Alexa.com, are
being examined to see if they offer optimized versions for
Internet-connected mobile devices and Smart TVs. Results show
wide support for mobile devices in contrast to very limited
support for Smart TVs.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
