This document discusses three experiences a mental health nurse had and the lessons learned from each one. The first experience was failing to properly collect a patient's health history, missing their diabetes diagnosis. This taught the importance of thorough patient histories. The second experience caring for an Indigenous patient reinforced the need for cultural competence. The third experience trying to educate a schizophrenic patient about medication adherence showed the nurse the importance of building rapport and trust with patients. The nurse learned they need to verify medical records, include family more, improve communication skills, and focus on strong nurse-patient relationships.
