Forget bad experiences of high school geology, we kick-started our 2017 webinar program with three ‘rock stars’ of CO2 storage communication – Dr Linda Stalker, Science Director of Australia’s National Geosequestration Laboratory, Lori Gauvreau, Communication and Engagement Specialist for Schlumberger Carbon Services, and Norm Sacuta, Communication Manager at the Petroleum Technology Research Centre who all joined Kirsty Anderson, the Institute’s Senior Advisor on Public Engagement, to discuss the challenges of communicating about CO2 storage. They shared tips, tools and some creative solutions for getting people engaged with this topic.
This entire Webinar Series has been designed to hear directly from the experts and project practitioners researching and delivering public engagement, education and outreach best practice for carbon capture and storage. This third webinar was less focused on research and more on the real project problems and best practice solutions. The public engagement, education and outreach for CCS Webinar Series kicked off this September with a stellar opportunity to join three international public engagement experts, as they reflected on the key research findings and lessons learned from over 10 years of social research and project engagement experience.
World-renowned social researcher and IEAGHG Social Research Network Chair Peta Ashworth started the discussion by setting out her key lessons learned, and what future challenges and opportunities she perceives for public engagement with CCS.
An expert panel made up of Sarah Wade, Environmental Regulation and Policy Consultant and Coordinator of the Outreach Working Group for the US Department of Energy Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership Initiative, and Norm Sacuta, Communication Manager at the Petroleum Technology Research Centre and Director of Communications for the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project, then discussed these conclusions and their own experiences of engaging the public, before opening the Webinar up to questions from the audience.

The second webinar in the public engagement, education and outreach for CCS Series took a more in-depth look at CCS education, specifically the creation and delivery of CCS education programs within developing countries.
Education has long been recognised as a critical component in understanding how science, society, and adaptation influence thinking about issues impacting our climate. As an emerging technology with an important role to play in shaping our low carbon energy future, CCS plays a role in our teaching around these topics in both developed and developing countries.
In this webinar, geochemist and renowned CCS education professional Sallie Greenberg, PhD, was joined by the Stakeholder Engagement Team from the South African Centre for Carbon Capture & Storage (SACCCS) to discuss the key learnings and experiences highlighted in, CCS education in developing countries a recent guidance paper for the Global CCS Institute.
Drawing on learning from existing CCS education initiatives and good practice from the wider education literature, Dr Greenberg highlighted areas of universal approach while facing particular challenges when working in the context of a developing country. Ms Polly Modiko, the Head of Stakeholder Engagement at SACCCS, then introduced the comprehensive program of education and outreach activities that the SACCCS team have been developing to support exploration of opportunities for an onshore Pilot CO2 Storage Project (PCSP) in South Africa.

To highlight the research and achievements of Australian researchers, the Global CCS Institute together with ANLEC R&D will hold a series of webinars throughout 2016 and 2017. Each webinar will highlight a specific ANLEC R&D research project and the relevant report found on the Institute’s website. This is the sixth webinar of the series and presented the results of chemical and mechanical changes that carbon dioxide (CO2) may have at a prospective storage complex in the Surat Basin, Queensland, Australia.
Earth Sciences and Chemical Engineering researchers at the University of Queensland have been investigating the effects of supercritical CO2 injection on reservoir properties in the near wellbore region as a result of geochemical reactions since 2011. The near wellbore area is critical for CO2 injection into deep geological formations as most of the resistance to flow occurs in this region. Any changes to the permeability can have significant economic impact in terms of well utilisation efficiency and compression costs. In the far field, away from the well, the affected reservoir is much larger and changes to permeability through blocking or enhancement have relatively low impact.

'What happens when CO2 is stored underground' is a very useful guide for those at the frontline, communicating and educating the public about CO2 and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
The booklet provides simple answers to some of the most frequently asked questions around CCS, all grounded in the experience, and extensive research results, of the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage program – an internationally significant research program that operated in Saskatchewan, Canada from 2000-2012.
This webinar provided opportunity to join lead author, Norm Sacuta from the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) and Kirsty Anderson from the Global CCS Institute, as they gave an overview of the resource, and discuss the findings from a review process that involved community stakeholder focus groups and a communication expert review panel.

SESSION VI: PLENARY –PILLARS FOR NATIONAL ADAPTATION PLANS
The session will examine a few case studies of how a particular issue of prime importance for a country can be the main entry point or pillar of the adaptation work, after which all other issues would then be considered. Three examples will be covered. Madagascar is a well-known centre of biological biodiversity. Addressing climate change through adaptation must consider the dynamics of this biodiversity including closely related stress factors such as poverty, pressure on land due to deforestation, shifting viability of the main cash crops when climatic conditions change, etc. Two other examples are on taking a regional approach to the assessment and development of adaptation responses in the context of hydro-energy. In other cases, a focus on community-based adaptation has been very successful, as is the case for Bangladesh.

SESSION VI: PLENARY –PILLARS FOR NATIONAL ADAPTATION PLANS
The session will examine a few case studies of how a particular issue of prime importance for a country can be the main entry point or pillar of the adaptation work, after which all other issues would then be considered. Three examples will be covered. Madagascar is a well-known centre of biological biodiversity. Addressing climate change through adaptation must consider the dynamics of this biodiversity including closely related stress factors such as poverty, pressure on land due to deforestation, shifting viability of the main cash crops when climatic conditions change, etc. Two other examples are on taking a regional approach to the assessment and development of adaptation responses in the context of hydro-energy. In other cases, a focus on community-based adaptation has been very successful, as is the case for Bangladesh.

Peace Week 2017
Lakeridge Junior High held a Peace Week with daily activities focused on improving the school environment and student behavior. Each day addressed a different issue like bullying, littering, and hallway behavior. Activities included a get-to-know-you bingo game, writing positive hallway messages, questions about responding to bullying, a litter scavenger hunt, and a selfie contest. Hundreds of students participated across the week's events. As a result, students were more mindful of their surroundings and respectful of others seeking to enhance the school experience for all.
Recycling - Amideast Jordan 2016 Ma’an
The students at Access / Ma'en participated in a virtual exchange program to address recycling in their community. They created a recycling campaign and encouraged students and teachers to develop recycling habits by collecting cartoons and decorating them as recycling bins. While they faced challenges finding companies to collect recycled materials, they had the new idea to recycle useful items for children at their center. They are hoping to continue the project to help keep their community healthier.
Eliminating Poverty by Promoting Literacy - The Lyceum

- 1. MISUSE OF WATER & ELECTRICITY [Qatar Independent Secondary School/ Doha -Qatar] In collaboration with [Lindblom Math & Science Academy, Chicago - Illinois] Global Citizenship Project
- 2. PROJECT BACKGROUND Qatar Independent Secondary School/ Doha – Qatar participated in a virtual exchange program hosted by Global Nomads Group. As part of the program, our school collaborated with Lindblom Math & Science Academy, Chicago - Illinois to develop solutions to the challenges our communities face. We decided to address the problem of Misuse of Water & Electricity To do this, we created a school Exhibit, a video and distributed some flyers.
- 4. MISUSE OF WATER & ELECTRICITY1. Why is the project important to you and your community? Qatar may have the highest rate of water consumption per person in the world, at 430 liters a day. It’s yet another superlative to add to the list, alongside world’s highest per capita carbon footprint and world’s richest country per capita. 2. What did you hope to achieve through this project? To create awareness and take some actions towards conserving water & electricity. 3.How it will address the problem? It would enable to change some habits & malpractices and create a general consciousness towards creating a sustainable environment for future generations by saving the excess usage of water &

PROCESS 1 • Brainstorming problems in the community and narrowing them down to identify the actual problem 2 •Sharing the Problem Statement with peers ( Partner community) during IVC 2 and agreeing upon as a common problem for both communities 3 •Sharing the Activity Plan with peers ( Partner community) during IVC 3 and revising the Problem statement 4 •Deciding on Awareness and Action as the goals of the projects 5 •Agreeing with partner School on the Title of our Project – Misuse of water & Electricity 6 •Exchanging ideas on how to collaborate and actions that would be taken at both schools
