The document provides instructions for students on their first assignment in a classroom. It tells students to get their boarding pass from the teacher, go to their assigned seat, get out their materials, and begin the boarding pass assignment and any homework assignments written on the board. It also lists some rules for students, such as no cellphones, raising your hand to speak, being polite, participating in class, and making sure to be on time and bring a note if late. It discusses getting missed assignments if absent and the grading system of approved, temporary, and denied. The first assignment is to create a poster about yourself.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT
Editor's Notes
Welcome to my class! I’m Miss Fair and I’m very excited to be your teacher this year! We are going to have a great time learning together and I can’t wait to get to know each of you! To start off, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself so that you can get to know me and what you can expect for this school year.
One of the first things that you should know about me, is that I love to travel! I think that travelling is a great way to learn. When you travel, you get to meet new people, see new places, learn new languages and taste all kinds of new and different food. I’ve been fortunate to go to many different countries and experience so many wonderful and fun things that I can’t wait to share with you! A few of my favorite countries that I’ve visited are France, Italy, Ecuador and The Bahamas. These are some of the pictures that I’ve taken in these places.
Even though we will be in the classroom, that won’t limit us from learning more about the world! In our lessons and assignments this year, I hope to make things more fun and interesting for us by having a weekly destination for us to learn about. Almost all of our assignments, worksheets and homework will incorporate something about the weekly destination. This way we can travel the world from our desks!
But to make class fun, I’ll need your help. As you walk in to class each day, a boarding pass will be handed to you. This boarding pass will be an assignment that is written on the board. It will be a short 3 to 4 question assignment that I will need you to complete and hand back to me as you leave class each day. Your boarding pass will be the first thing that you start working on when you get into the classroom each morning.
Just like when you fly on an airplane, when I hand you your boarding pass, you will go sit in your assigned seat. Once you get to your seat, make sure to put everything out on your desk that you may need for class; your notebook, textbook, pencil, etc. After you have everything out on your desk and ready to start class, go ahead and begin completing your boarding pass activity. Once you complete your boarding pass activity, you can begin copying any homework assignments that are written on the board into your notebooks. This will give everyone enough time to get settled and then we can get started on exploring our lesson for the day.
I’ll be honest, when I was in the 4th grade, homework was my least favorite part of school. I’m still not a huge fan of it, so my policy for homework will be a bit different than giving homework every day. Every Tuesday and Thursday you will be assigned homework assignments. These assignments will be written on the far left side of the board. You will need to copy the homework assignments into your notebook after you complete your boarding pass activity. Your homework assignments must be completed by the next day of class (Wednesday and Friday). Because you will only have two days of homework to take home, this will mean that Monday, Wednesday and Friday; I will need you all to work extra hard and pay close attention in class so that we are able to cover all the lesson material.
Now that we know how to start the day, let’s go over what rules you will be expected to follow in class. Just like a compass helps guide adventurers, rules will help guide you through this class. These rules are important for you to learn and follow because they will help you in succeeding in this class.
The first rule that is important to follow is no cellphones in class. If you have a cellphone with you, make sure it is turned off or on silent and left in your back pack. If I see it out, I will take it up and keep it at my desk until class ends.
The second rule to follow is please raise your hand to ask or answer a question. This will help me to identify students who would like to speak.
The third rule to follow is be polite to everyone in the classroom. We all deserve respect so I expect each of you to show respect to one another and to me.
I want you to view this class as a team. We are all working together to learn new things and have fun while doing so. Treat your classmates with kindness and support them in their studies.
Finally, please participate during lessons and activities. We will be doing so many fun things in the class. If you don’t participate, you will miss out on all the fun and I don’t want that to happen!
When you’re traveling, it is very important to be on time. If you’re trying to catch a bus, train or flight, you have to be on time because they won’t wait to leave if you’re late. In the same way, you can think of entering class on time like “boarding time”. Class starts when the bell rings and if you’re late, you will miss out on important information. I know that there are some situations that may keep you from being on time but please try hard to show up on time and ready for class. If you are late, please make sure to bring a note explaining why you were late. Hand the note to me when you enter the class if I am at my desk. If I am teaching, wait till the end of class to give me the note. Seat yourself quietly at your desk and please try not to disturb your classmates when you come in late.
We all get sick from time to time. If you miss class due to an illness, please come see me when you get back to class and I will help you with catching up on your missed work.
Think of your report card like you would a passport. When you arrive in a different country, you have to get your passport stamped to be able to enter the country. That’s why you always want to be approved. If you are denied, you can’t enter the country. You have to return home and miss out on all the fun that you might be able to have. If you have a temporary visa, that means you can stay in the country for a little while but you will have to do some extra work to be able to get approved for a permanent visa. In class, we will have 3 statuses of grading on assignments. The status that you will want to achieve is to be approved. This means that you will need an 86 or higher. If you receive a temporary status, this means that you are close to being approved but you will need to work a little harder on your assignments in order to be approved. If you have a 77 up to an 85, put in the extra effort so that you can be approved. The status that you will want to avoid is being denied. If you receive a 0 to a 76, I will work with you to help you in understanding the material better. I want you all to succeed so we will work hard to avoid being denied.
Instead of looking at school as something that you have to do each day, let’s look at it as an adventure! We will learn new things, explore new places and become citizens of the world from our desks. I will do my part to make this class as fun and exciting as possible but I will need you to do your part by coming to class prepared and with a good attitude.
Now that you know a little bit about the things that I like and what you can expect for the year, I want you to tell me about the things that you like and your goals for the year! Your first assignment will be to create a poster that tells me about yourself, some of your favorite things, what goals you hope to accomplish and one place that you would like to travel. This assignment will not be graded. Just have fun and be creative! You can use photos, pictures from magazines and newspapers or drawings in your project. Art supplies are located on the shelves at the back of the room.
You will have the rest of the class to begin working on this assignment and I will be happy to help you with any questions that you may have. This assignment will be due on Friday next week. I’m looking forward to getting to know each of you!
