Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 1. Mise En Scene Example What It Is Used For Facial Expression Facial expressions are used to show how a person is feeling mainly. So they may smile if they are happy, or frown if they are sad. Performance Actors will perform when playing their role to make the film/program more interesting, so they will put everything they have got into a role instead of just re-sighting their lines. Lighting Different lighting can be used to portray different moods during a certain scene. Also the lighting will depend on the time of day the scene is supposed to be set in, so for example, dark lights may be used when it is supposed to be night time. Costume Costumes are used to make the character more believable. So a tramp would wear scruffy clothes, a wealthy person would wear very posh clothes and so on.
- 2. Make Up Like costumes, make up makes the character more believable. So a poor person may have shading on their face to make them look faint and hungry, and a clown will have their faces painted white with big lips and a red nose. Colour The colours can represent feeling during a scene. So if a character is happy, the colours will be bright and bold, and if they are sad, there will be dull and miserable colours. Props Props are used to make the program/film more believable. So if there is a film about football and there isn’t a football, the viewers are not going to understand. Props can also make something more interesting instead of just watching people act. Setting The setting tells the viewer a lot about what time setting the scene may be in or what kind of film/program it is. So for example, Downton Abbey is set in a big stately home in the middle of nowhere practically, and
- 3. Waterloo Road is set in a school. Décor This is the furnishing and decoration of a room. Similar to setting, props and costumes, this makes the scene more believable and gives the viewer and idea as to what it would be like to be in that certain scene yourself. So, the Downton Abbey house is very vintage and old fashioned, and the Waterloo Road school is very much like a school with white boards in the class rooms, the changing rooms with showers, tables and chairs in the class rooms and food and seating in the canteen.
