Introduction of Minimalism
 WHAT IS MINIMALISM ?
 Along with form, light, space and material it demonstrates
techniques such as:
 Eliminate emotion, meanings and indications.
 Creation of singularity.
 Move away from alternate perceptions.
 Elimination of excessive ornamentation.
 Less is more.
EXCESSIVE SIMPLE
The Japanese influence on minimalism
architecture.
 Minimalist Architects
LUDWIG MIESVAN DER ROHE (GERMANY
1886-1969)
TADAO ANDO (JAPAN 1941) ALBERTO C. BAEZA (SPAIN 1946)
JOHN PAWSON (UK 1949)LUIS BARRAGAN (MEXICO1902-1988)
 Tadao Ando (Japan 1941)
 Emphasizing
nothingness and empty
space to represent the
beauty of simplicity.
 Introduction of elements
like light and wind inside
the structure.
 Involving rectangular
systems cut through by
curved or angled walls,
can look at first glance
rather arbitrary and
abstract.
Church Of Light, Osaka
•It was built in 1989, in the city of Ibaraki, Osaka
 CONCEPT
 The dual nature of co existence solid/ void/ dark, stark/
serene.
 The space of the chapel is defined by light, the strong contrast
between light and solid.
 The cross on the east façade allows for light to pour into the space
throughout the space and into the day,
which has a dematerialising effect
on the interior concrete walls
transforming the dark volume
into a illuminated box.
The concrete construction is a reinforcement of Ando's
principle focus on simplicity and minimalistic aesthetic.
Luis Barragan (Mexico1902-1988)
 Luis Barragan, Architect of
Colour .
 He was a Mexican
Architect and Engineer.
 His work has influenced
contemporary architects
visually and conceptually.
 Framed for mastery of
SPACE and LIGHT.
Concept
 The colours were more than just
another design element in the
building process.
 Enhance the experience of light
shadow and surprise.
 Colours were not arbitrary (based
on random choice) but rooted in how
his culture experienced the world.
 White walls were off set by a wide
range of tones: brilliant yellow, pink,
fuchsia, magenta, vermillion,
cadmium red, indigo, cobalt,
sapphire, lilac and deep purple.
Tlalpan Chapel,Tlalpan, Mexico City (1954–60)
Upon entering, we get to a small semi sunken courtyard, with white walls,
in one of which a monumental cross is embedded.
The simple but powerful detail and color of the yellow
grid reflecting on the black-stone pond is simply
overwhelming.
Effect of lateral illumination of the cross.
Pink hue changes according to time of day.
 Characteristics of modern minimalist house
design include:
 Simplicity in form and function
 Uncomplicated cladding & wall finishes
 Clean, open, light-filled spaces
 Simple detailing devoid of decoration
 Strategic use of materials for visual interest,
texture, and personality
1. Simplicity in Form and Function
 Simple, straightforward, efficient plan layout with stacked volumes of
spaces.
 This creates clarity in plan, where spaces are predictable and
uncomplicated.
 Simple forms, open floor plans, minimal interior walls, modest
storage areas, and an emphasis on views and daylight are defining
characteristics of many minimalist floor plans.
[The Stripe House by GAAGA via
ArchDaily.]
2. Uncomplicated cladding & wall
finishes
 Using a simple continuous exterior cladding material can
easily provide visual appeal and articulation by expressing the
physical characteristics of the materials and their texture.
3. Clean, open, light-filled spaces
 Light coloured wall surfaces, clean modern
detailing, uncluttered spaces and a neutral colour palette
(with a few splashes of colour).
4. Simple detailing devoid of decoration
 Simple minimalistic details are also cost-effective
5. Strategic use of materials for visual interest,
texture, and personality
 Minimalism In Interior Design
Minimalism in interior design means spacious rooms with minimum
of furniture and details.
 Minimalism In Furniture Design
Subjectivity by A. G. Fronzoni
Minimalistic Table
Minimalism In Painting
Frank Stella Harran II 1967
 Minimalism In photography
The elements that are put into the photo are kept to a minimum, but the ones that
are present should be significant to the overall idea and symbolism of the photo.
 Minimalism In sculpture

Creation of singularity & Geometric
• Conclusion
1. Create minimal architecture "form" is extremely important.
2. The general idea about use of colour in minimal architecture is,
use of pure white or monochromatic.
3. Colours, textures, materials, light and element details are also
important to enhance the spatial quality of the minimalist space.
4. Create simple & wonderful spaces, which do not distract the
visual concentration of the person who perceives a space.
5. Eliminate the unnecessary to reach the essence.
