Mind Sound Resonance Technique (MSRT)
• Mind Sound Resonance Method (MSRM) is one of the advanced Yoga Techniques for achieving the goal of positive health,
will power, concentration, good memory and deep relaxation. MSRT is to generate resonance throughout the body by
repetition of mental sounds. This helps in revitalizing the internal energy in the body.
• MSRT opens the secret of “Mantra" the tool developed in the yoga tradition for developing the pranic and mental powers of
human beings.
• For developing the will power, concentration, deep relaxation, etc. It is becoming a boon to sufferers of AIDS and Cancer.
• What is Mind?
• According to many of the hard core scientists, mind is mere functioning of the brain. EEG records these changes in the brain.
Brain Atlas can scan different sections of the brain at any point of time and present beautiful colour photographs, showing the
structure of the brain, distribution of energies and activities.
• Positron Emission Tomography (PET) can record even the minute changes in blood flow in the capillaries of the brain. All these
sophisticated equipment have clearly indicated that we know very little (hardly 2%) about the capacities of the brain. And
hence much less about the mind.
• Some of the brain researchers trying to investigate and remedy the pathological conditions have astonished the researchers
through newer pathways created in the brain to cope with the demand. For example, a blind person develops much higher
sensitivity of all other senses than an ordinary person and newer pathways in the brain. Brain researchers are nearing to
accept a very creative entity within us which can change the brain functioning itself, probably reaching at a definition of mind.
• According to Yoga lore, mind is a conglomeration of thoughts, thoughts which are manifest and which are unmanifest as in
wakeful state, dream state and deep sleep state. Patanjali, a great yoga master, in his aphorisms of yoga brings out this aspect
very clearly in the following sutra:
• Pramana viparyaya vikalpa nidra smrtayah pys 1.6
• The direct sense perception (valid cognition), wrong knowledge (as mirage), mere verbal idea representing no corresponding
objects such as Horse’s horns, deep-sleep with or without dreams and memory, the store-house of all the past experiences,
are the 5 modifications of mind.
• Mind, therefore, is a set of unmanifested thoughts stored deep down the memory lane at all our unconscious, subconscious
and superconsciouness states, as well as the manifest thoughts while we daydream, dream, cognize things wrongly or rightly
in the wakeful state.
• We all exist unmanifested in the past, manifest in the present and again unmanifested in future, says Gita.
• Similarly we move through the manifest and the unmanifested states of the mind. Further there are again gross, normal
and subtle states in both of them (Tamas, Rajas and Sattva). That is called quality (Gunas). The quality of deep sleep can vary
from person to person, night to night and place to place. Similarly there are different layers of superconsciouness states. Jada
Samadhi, for example, is a gross superconsciouness state. Thus, mind is an ensemblage of thoughts, manifest and
unmanifest.
• They are conceived as waves in the ocean of pure consciousness. Just as waves come up and diffuse, there could be
turbulent sea or a calm ocean. Mind waves come up and go back. These waves could be violent or calm, as in states of
anxiety, hyperkinetic children, when we are angry and burning with hate or when we are peaceful, happy, self-satisfied. Now
we come to the concept of Sound.
• What is Sound?
• Sound, according to science, is a form of energy. It moves as waves through compressions and rarefactions.
• Sound needs air (or a medium) for its travel. It cannot move without a medium. The famous bell jar experiment proves
that sound is not heard outside when the jar is evacuated. The speed of sound varies with the media. These rarefactions
and compressions vibrate the ear drum and that is how we hear the sound.
• There are two aspects to a sound wave.
• 1. Amplitude which corresponds to loudness, and
• 2. Frequency corresponding to pitch.
• The number of cycles in a second is called the frequency. Higher the frequency, higher the pitch, shrillness.
• The amplitude is measured in mm. The higher the amplitude, greater the loudness. The sound waves get diffused and become
inaudible after a certain distance. The distance travelled depends on both the factors described above: loudness and
frequency. The intensity of sound measured in decibels (db) is directly proportional to the distance travelled.
• Concept of Sound
• Now the concept of sound, Sabda according to Yoga and spiritual lore. It is vibration. It is a wave. It can be audible or
inaudible. Ahata or Anahata. It is a quality of akasa, space.
• Thus Sabda can travel through vacuum as well, like electromagnetic waves do. That is what distinguishes the concept of sound
in Yoga compared to physics. Yet, there is a commonality that it travels as waves.
• Anahata - that which is not hitting, is the inner sound, the subtler sound. Yogis hear them inside their heart - it is said in
Hathapradipika by the practice of Bhramari pranayama. It is also well known that during meditation, most of the deep
meditators hear the inner sound. That is the mental sound.
• Mind and sound
• Mind normally works either as pictures or sound or both. Most people think in the form of picture. But there are people who
think almost in the auditory mode.
• Thus the sound that is heard is ahata. All ouch sounds as Mental Sound which are unheard are Anahata. Thus the spectrum
of Sabda, sound as postulated in yoga and spiritual lore is much broader and comprehensive than the sound conceived by
science.
• Now Resonance
• It occurs with matching of frequencies, tuning, as in a well-tuned Tambura or a violin. It means matching of the frequency
produced with the natural frequency of the body. What happens in Resonance?
• An army was marching across a bridge. As they come out of the bridge, the bridge cracked and collapsed. No floods, no
tornedo, no fire. It was a shocking surprise. An in-depth investigation and research brought out the phenomena of
RESONANCE.
• When the frequency of the march matched with the natural frequency of the bridge, there were violent oscillations due to
increased amplitude which was responsible for the collapse.
• That is how the rule ‘Break the steps when you cross a bridge', for the army emerged.
• There is matching at every point of the two
• waves. There is hence doubling of amplitudes of the resultant wave C. This is resonance.
• The two waves A and B are completely opposite - out of phase by 180
degrees (1/2 cycle). At every point, the two waves cancel each other. The
result is complete silencing.
• Though there are two sound waves, when they are combined, they subtract
each other’s effect. In most real situations, it is a combination of both; hardly
any frequencies match or are 180 degree out of phase.
• But in resonance, there is fine tuning and matching. When an expert Vina
player tunes the instrument, there is perfect matching and the whole
instrument sings as one whole.
• Pluck any part of the string, the whole instrument vibrates in
resonance. When matching occurs in musical instruments, there is resonance,
fullness (due to increased amplitudes) and melody.
• Bhramari repetition of a sound ‘M’ like the humming of a bee generates
resonance capable of bringing a fine massaging effect throughout the body.
• MSRT or Mind Sound Resonance Technique is to generate resonance throughout the body by repeating a mental sound.
Thus, we will be able to gain mastery over the mind and reach subtle layers of mind or superconsciouness, enhancing the
power of the mind, leading to the bliss of silence.
• The first step is to learn the art of producing resonance with loud, audible sound – Ahata sound. Three basic sounds A, U,
and M are used.
• “A” has the lowest frequency, ‘U’ the middle and ‘M’ the highest.
• Chant the sound ‘A’ loudly, so adjust the frequency of your chant that it will match with the natural frequency of your
body. You will feel fine vibrations in the lower parts of the body from toes to waist, if not the whole body.
• Chant,’ U’ loudly producing resonance in the middle part from waist to throat, if not the whole body. Keep a little air in the
mouth and force the sound through it to produce a powerful resonance. Invariably, the whole body resonates.
• Now chant ‘M’ loudly and feel the resonance throughout the head, if not the whole body. In a single breath combine A, U
and M to produce AUM sound and feel the resonant wave spreading from toes to head.
13.1. Stepwise practice
1. Prayer(sahana vavathu..)
2. a) Loud chanting of A, U, M and AUM (3 rounds). Feel completely body resonance.
b) ahata - anahata of A, U, M and AUM next time A-, U-, M- AUM (3 rounds). Feel resonance even with anahata
(mental) phase.
3. a) Loud chanting of Mrtyunjaya Mantra (MM) resonance even with anahata (mental) phase.
om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pustivardhanam
urvarukamiva bandhanat mrityormukseya mamrtat
om santhi santhi santhee
(3 rounds) Feel the pattern of resonant waves throughout the body.
b) ahata - anahata of Mrtyunjaya Mantra MM-, MM-, MM-(3 rounds) feel the pattern of resonance waves even with
anahata phase.
4. Anahata AUM (9 rounds)
Repeat AUM in the mind, feeling the resonant waves throughout the body.
5. Ajapajapa AUM to SILENCE (9 rounds). Feel the resonant waves of Om coming up and spreading throughout the body and
diffusing into silence (9 rounds)
6. Stay in Silence.
7. Resolve.
8. Prayer.(om santhi santhi santhi)
