Diego Velazquez was a leading Spanish painter born in 1599 in Seville, Spain. He first studied under Francisco de Herrera and later became an apprentice of Francisco Pacheco. In 1618, he married Pacheco's daughter Juana and had two daughters. Velazquez went to Madrid in 1622 where he served as court painter to King Philip IV, painting portraits of the royal family. He is renowned for works like Las Meninas, La Venus del espejo, and La Rendición de Breda. Velazquez died in Madrid in 1660.
