Summary
My work experience has taken me many places in the last 27 plus
years in the field of Utility, Road work and Site Development. I have
worked in Wyoming, Michigan, Arizona, North Dakota, Colorado and
Texas. I started as laborer and worked my way up through the industry
through hard work and attention to detail. A willingness to learn all
that was offered in order to better myself and my situation. Some of
the things I have done have been harder than others but all learning
experiences just the same. I have been involved either hands on or
in a supervisory capacity in construction of sections of highway,
bridges, numerous commercial sites, subdivisions and major utility re-
construction work replacing storm drains, sanitary sewer and water
mains down existing city streets. Having hands on experience in these
things is what has aided me in being a successful estimator, project
manager and superintendent as well as general manager. My duties
have been purchasing materials and equipment as well as
delegating duties and scheduling crews and materials to meet dead
lines and budgets. I also have had duties as a general manager
which required working with the office staff on payroll, billing and
accounts receivable and accounts payable and developing codes
of conduct and safety items for the companies as well. My strong suit
is in the civil engineering field as I am currently the qualified party for
John Gilgie Inc. Located in Bullhead City Arizona, which is an “A-
General Engineering Licensee.
My major priorities for the pipe crews are to make sure they are
not lacking any materials or equipment needed to perform their
duties. Production is huge and demanded when installation of utilities
are involved. I also pride myself in making sure existing utilities are not
damaged and when exposed are backfilled properly. I require my
1
crew leaders and foremen to keep accurate “as built” items in the
event they are needed in the future for testing, raising of valve cans
or manhole castings. As much as I enjoy estimating and the
knowledge of the projects I gain from this, I enjoy working in the field
and being able to interact with the crews seeing their needs and
where improvements or changes can be made to be more
productive and profitable for all parties involved.
My experiences are many. I am most proud of the installation of
larger diameter concrete sanitary sewer and storm drain which were
in rather wet ground which required a lot of de-watering work. I am
also proud of the 48’ deep 12 ft diameter lift station that I installed
which also required a lot of de-watering work. I am a proficient
heavy equipment operator which I have had the privilege and
experience of using trench boxes. I have used tight sheeting, stacked
boxes and other various means to install sanitary sewer and storm
drain items. I have had substantial experience in all phases of utilities
from water main, sanitary sewer, storm drain and dry utilities. I have
been on numerous projects and have worked for companies that
can bond up to 150 Million dollars in work to companies that can only
bond about 250 thousand dollars in work. The projects have been
large and small in scale but regardless the pipe goes in the same no
matter the amounts.
The most important thing I think that I have instructed the crews that
have worked for me over the years is that while we need to be
productive and safe, we still need to install all items right the first time.
If we accomplish quality workmanship the testing of the items installed
and the clean up go quickly and the employer makes money so that
we can continue to have quality equipment and projects ahead. I
stress a clean job site due to the fact it reflects on the company and
the people they employee.
In the commercial and site work I have had the opportunity to learn
from very knowledgeable people over the years. I am able to take a
set of plans, lay out the site and establish cuts and fills as well as short
hauls and long hauls for scrapers and off road dump trucks. I have
been on projects that were several thousand acres to one or two
acres and have been on projects that we had to move six million
yards of dirt to projects where we move several hundred yards of dirt.
I have had the hands on experience of not only running equipment
on these projects but also managing these projects including
personnel and equipment. Site work has been completed from
2
demolition of existing buildings, parking lots, streets, utilities and or
recycling items for re-use on site or others or mining areas for materials
to balance project site under my supervision.
The past employers that I have had will tell you I am one of the most
dedicated personal you will find. I am the one that is the first one to
work and the last one to leave. I have also spent many nights and
weekends working on bids and estimates for projects as well as setting
schedules for projects that may need more than one plan of attack. I
always like to have a plan “A” “B” “C” or even “D” so that if there is
an interruption to the schedule of the project either by equipment
breaking or material delays. There will be other ways to get the
project work done with no or minimal down time or loss time incurred.
Hands on in the field I can set line and pipe lasers. Check Grade and
set stakes for cut and fills. Operate almost every piece of equipment
in the industry proficiently.
As an estimator I have never worked for a company where we
have had access to digital scanning equipment for doing take offs. I
have had to do all my take offs with rolling rulers and scale rulers then
transferring them to a format of which I have incorporated with every
company I have estimated for. Along with the take offs I have had to
familiarize myself with the specifications provided for the project I am
bidding. I am efficient with Microsoft word and excel programs.
As a project manager I learned what being in the middle is all
about. I have had to deal with sub contractors, engineers, DOT
personnel of several states. OSHA, Owners, Developers, General
Contractors, all the while making sure the company I have worked for
still comes out looking and acting professional and making a profit.
This could be making change orders, adding crews to accommodate
accelerated schedules, or Value Engineering if needed. Making sure
submittals were submitted correctly and on time. Dealing with
vendors to make sure they were not over supplying items or over
charging and giving us their best deals.
