World Bank estimated, in 2025 the production of municipal solid waste will be 2.2 billion tones worldwide. With this amount, we are more and more polluting our own environment. Seven to eight percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions arise from continued landfilling. EfW (WtE) does not only decrease the volume of waste, it also protects natural resources like land and water. There is no additional need for landfills, where leakage can occur and pollute our tap water. It also protects air and climate because the regulations by law for EfW are more stringent than for coal fired power plants or any other industry. EfW plants decrease the greenhouse gases which come from landfill.

To alleviate water shortages, WOG Group offers a small water plant that is housed inside a portable container. All complex and common answers are communicated by a group of experts. We refined the water, which is crucial for the area, by killing even the smallest particles during treatment. When portable water filtration systems are used up, it reduces transportation costs. In addition to serving as a free water treatment facility, our adaptable water purification units may join with a rhythmic motion at any point plant for an additional limit.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

to the environment and sustainable
development. Proof of this commitment is the
company’s investment of over €11.5 million in
a number of wastewater treatment initiatives
and projects aimed at reducing emissions
through energy recovery.
Veolia Water Technologies (VWT) has provided
a response to these water treatment needs by
offering sustainable, efficient technological
solutions that increase process performance
whilst embodying the company’s
commitment to the environment.
Water partners since 2003.
From process water, wastewater and
sludge treatment to energy efficiency
and water reuse.
In wastewater…
In 2003, VWT was awarded a turnkey project
for the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant
(WWTP) at ElPozo Alimentación’s production
facility in Alhama de Murcia. The industrial
WWTP was designed for a treatment capacity
of 6,000 m/day and 23,880 kg COD/day, a
pollution load corresponding to a population
equivalent of 200,000 inhabitants. The
treatment process consists of an activated
sludge facility including the BIO-DENIPHO™
technology for the removal of organic matter,
phosphorus and nitrogen.
…in process water…
In 2005, VWT supplied two reverse osmosis
units with a total capacity of 4,000 m/day
for the production of water to feed the steam
boiler and the evaporative condensers, as well
as for other uses at the factory. Since these
units went into operation, VWT has also been
entrusted with the provision of technical
assistance and Hydrex® chemical products
(antiscalants, products for plant cleaning
and maintenance). At the end of 2015, VWT
was awarded a further contract to supply a
2,000 m/day reverse osmosis unit to cover
additional production requirements.

6. …for sludge treatment…
In 2011, ElPozo Alimentación once again
placed its trust in VWT for the remodeling of
the wastewater pretreatment to deal with
higher organic loading resulting from the
increase in the activity production, which
went from 8,000 to 12,000 pigs processed
per day. The work also included enlarging
the sludge line through the construction of
two 3,050 m anaerobic digesters and the
installation of a cogeneration system for
the production of 800 kW of electricity for
self-consumption at the WWTP and 400 kW
of thermal energy to heat the sludge during
the digestion process, without the need for
any other fuel. The digesters also enable a
reduction of 45% in sludge volumes, with
consequent cost savings in sludge treatment
and final disposal.
… and for energy valorisation
At the end of 2014, with the aim of
maximizing the use of the biogas produced
in the anaerobic digesters, VWT undertook
the task of modifying the gas line at the
industrial WWTP to enable the excess biogas
produced at the plant to be exploited. Some
of the biogas is used to heat the sludge in
the digesters and the remainder is sent to a
new boiler to generate 5,000 kg/h of steam.
The scope of the contract also encompassed
extending the piping network, and installing
a new gas flare as well as a new biogas
desulphurization unit including VWT’s
Sulfothane™ technology, as a preventive
measure to protect the facilities against
corrosion.
Towards a circular economy
In addition to energy valorization – and
consequently, a reduction of the carbon
footprint of the factory - ElPozo Alimentación
and VWT have also undertaken a number of
water reuse initiatives. These actions have
enabled the reduction of water consumption
per pig processed, achieving one of the lowest
ratio sector in Europe.
Veolia Water Technologies has become
the leading partner for companies which,
like ElPozo Alimentación, are committed
to sustainable development. VWT offers
such companies solutions ranging from the
treatment of process water, wastewater and
sludge to solutions aimed at reducing water
consumption and increasing energy efficiency,
in order to promote and work towards a
circular economy. ●

59. Discover the world’s first self-sustaining Freezone cluster.
Join us on a journey into the future as we firm up plans for SOHAR
Innovation Zone, the world’s first self-sustaining Freezone cluster.
Unconnected to the power grid, the Zone creates its own energy
and recycles its own waste. The Zone uses proven and trustworthy
techniques brought together in one integrated system for the first
time, to demonstrate the full potential of Oman’s technology sector.
At night, water is released
from the mountain that
drives hydroelectric
generators to produce
the electricity required
in the Zone during the
hours of darkness.
In the future, unmanned quad-copters
may rapidly and easily deliver urgent spare
parts, right to the doors of our tenants’
businesses in the Port and Freezone,
eliminating any waiting times.
Sensors on shipping containers and embedded in the cargo will give real time
information about the position and speed of shipments, their condition,
temperature and humidity. They will also warn of any shock events, like container doors
being opened for a Customs inspection. Other sensors will track truck
and forklift movements, reducing turnaround times and increasing safety by
warning of potential hazards like imbalanced loads or pending collisions.
As a backup, and to
make the operation one
hundred per cent secure
during freak events like
sandstorms, a battery
park will be established
to store sufficient
power reserves.
From automobiles to aerospace, any application that involves
complex metal parts potentially benefits from metal 3D printing
technology. Three-dimensional CAD data is used
to build a metal part layer-by-layer. The printing machines
distribute even layers of metallic powder fused together by
a high-powered laser to gradually form the finished part.
When exiting the fish farm, the
water is still cold enough to be
used for cooling our Freezone
office complex. This office building
is designed to exacting
environmental standards to reduce
its power usage and environmental
impact. The solar park provides the
electricity required in the offices.
Steam is generated inside
glasshouses using thin, concave
mirrors and water pipes, a proven
technique that is already in use in
Oman’s oil industry. The mirrors
track the sun throughout the day,
focusing heat on the water pipes.
The concentrated sunlight boils the
water to generate steam.
The greenhouses protect the
mirrors from high winds and
blowing sand. The glass has an
automated washing system to
maintain optimal performance even
in dusty conditions.Seawater is pumped in from 25
kilometres offshore in the Gulf
of Oman. At around 19°c, the
cold saltwater condenses in the
greenhouses and trickles down
as freshwater to irrigate the crops
inside. Transparent solar cells on the
roof filter ultraviolet rays to create
power for the pumps, while the
visible spectrum passes through to
support plant growth.
The cold water is used to
cool the water in the fish
farm’s tanks. Fish is a great
source of food and protein.
The demand for fish and fish
related products is also
increasing rapidly, in line
with rapid population
growth across the Gulf.
The capacity of the solar park
is higher than needed during
daytime operating hours. The
excess electricity is used to
pump water 400 metres up
into the mountains behind the
Freezone, to be stored
in a large holding pond.
Using modern technology, the
steam drives absorption chillers to
create large quantities of cold
water. Some of the cold water is
stored to provide cooling during the
hot summer nights in Oman. The
rest is released into our fish farm.
