S3nsibility – Evaluating Pervasive Environments in Semi-Immersive Virtual Reality Laurence Judge Supervisor: Dr. Simon Dobson
Ubiquitous Computing Ubicomp seeks to separate the user from the desktop for quotidian tasks An intelligent home or working environment can transparently save endless man hours for menial tasks and provide more productivity Ambient Intelligence devices are proliferating and the increased presence of wireless networks allows these apparatuses to flourish.
The Downside Deployment of a full scale Sensor Network is very expensive No guarantee that all devices will work to maximum potential or in sync with one another in the environment where they are installed Testing and configuration can take a very long time.
One Possible Solution Create and deploy sensors in a virtual environment Allow user to navigate through a familiar landscape Perform regular tasks and gather necessary information Deploy Sensors in a real environment using the gathered dataset If data collected is accurate, the sensor network should perform consistently
Approach Modify Half-life 2 Create custom maps e.g. UCD CASL 3 rd floor Create and deploy virtual sensors to gather information. Analyze Hotspots of user activity Configure components to leave no space “off radar” Install real-world sensors.
