Doing More with Less: The Crisis, Cooperation, and the Library
The current financial situation has forced many libraries to pay unprecedented attention to how they are organized to achieve their missions. One common thread emerging in the responses is cooperation: those needing to cut costs sharply are finding that they cannot do so incrementally but must instead transform their activities in ways that spread cost and diffuse risk among many partners. The talk will cover some of the opportunities available for transformative institutional collaboration among libraries, including collaborative, open source software development as well as the challenges facing those attempting to collaborate. It will pay particular attention to the question of how to collaborate strategically: that is, how to ensure that collaboration retains or increases a library’s ability to pursue mission, enhance agility, increase sovereignty, and improve sustainability.

However, traditionally these models were thought to be unable to produce secure, high-quality software. Some experiments applying these models to non-software projects like Wikipedia have shown results comparable to closed development. The collaborative structure of many projects, regardless of type, is similar to software with modular components and public versioning. For collaborative models to work outside software, unifying platforms are important, and constraints like in physical objects limit participation.
A Virtuous Cycle of Semantics and Participation
The document summarizes Davide Eynard's doctoral dissertation on using semantics to improve participative systems. It discusses several experimental developments, including using semantics to:
1) Extend semantic wikis by adding semantic templates to data and using ontologies to describe metadata.

ICSME 2016 keynote: An ecosystemic and socio-technical view on software maint...
These are the slides of my ICSME 2016 keynote, presented on 5 October 2016 in Raleigh, North Carolina. I focus on the difficulties of maintaining and evolving software ecosystems, large collections of interacting software components that are maintained by a large and active community of contributors and that evolve together in the same environment. Software ecosystems are becoming ubiquitous due to the omnipresence of open source software. I present several problems that arise during maintenance and evolution of software ecosystems, and I argue how some of these challenges should be addressed by adopting a socio-technical view and by relying on a multidisciplinary and mixed methods research approach. I illustrate this with examples of social network analysis, complex systems research, ecological biodiversity, and survival analysis.

Open Source Software is an important economic driving force. Companies are aware of the benefits and are adopting OSS as a strategy, opening their source code. However, fostering an OSS developer community is challenging. Newcomers to OSS projects face many technical and social barriers and commonly drop out before making their first contribution. In this keynote, I will talk about how companies are opening their code, the barriers newcomers face to join OSS projects, and FLOSSCoach, a tool we developed to support newcomers first steps.
Bio:
Marco Aurélio Gerosa is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. His research lies in the intersection between Software Engineering and Social Computing, focusing on the fields of empirical software engineering, mining software repositories, software evolution, and social dimensions of software development. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers. He served as Program Chair at ICGSE 2016 and PC member in several conferences, such as ACM CSCW, SANER, MSR, etc. In addition to his research, he also coordinates award-winning open source projects. Mario Juric proposes turning institution-developed astronomical data analysis software into sustainable open source projects. For example, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project's $50M software could benefit other telescopes but is currently difficult to install and use due to lack of documentation and support. The discussion focuses on how to leverage a small budget to maximize the software's impact and build an active community around specialized code from "company" projects. Led by Duke University, the OLE Project intends to build a design document for an open source library management system which will be based on the software design philosophy of service oriented architecture (SOA). SOA is becoming a dominant trend in technology as early adopters have shown that it provides the benefit of an agile system, one that is flexible in response to information demands. Lehigh’s Doreen Herold and Tim McGeary will present the status of the OLE Project, its process, its goals, and how other PALINET members can participate.
Mid Term Demo
S3nsibility evaluates using semi-immersive virtual reality to test pervasive environments before real-world deployment. It aims to address the high costs and challenges of testing sensor networks by creating a virtual replica where sensors can be deployed and their performance evaluated. Users would navigate the virtual space performing typical tasks while sensors gather data on activity hotspots and coverage. If the virtual testing matches real-world usage, the sensor configuration can be directly deployed, saving time and resources over real-world testing alone.
Midterm
This document discusses a project to visualize large social networks in a meaningful way. It notes that existing social network visualizations only show direct connections and not the broader network. The project aims to address this by using clustering techniques to reduce network complexity. Specifically, it will use both classic clustering to identify social groups and structural clustering to merge similar nodes. The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible.
