ACCION International is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide financial tools to help people work their way out of poverty through microfinance initiatives like MicroBike, which allows college students to form teams, plan local bike rides, and fundraise to support microentrepreneurs around the world by registering and fundraising at www.microbike.org.

5. MicroBike – “pedal against
poverty”
• An ACCION initiative
• Started in 2008 by a group of
recent college graduates
• Today is made up of
“microrides” in communities
around the world
• Bringing attention to the
problem of global poverty
• Directing needed resources
and attention to microfinance

How it Works:
• Each team must have at least one captain.
• The team captain will recruit riders and
others who want to join the team
• Team captains, with the help of their team
members, will map out a local bike route
and choose the day/s and time/s of the
ride (Weekend of October 1 – 3)
• Team captains, with the help of their team members, will set a fundraising
goal for the whole team
• MicroBike offers students a discounted registration rate of $10 per student;
Everyone who registers gets a tee‐shirt
• Each college team must raise a minimum of $200 (which will help cover
costs; any additional funds raised will directly support microentrepreneurs)

How to Get Started:
• Captains will register themselves and the team on www.microbike.org first.
Don’t forget to pick a memorable team name!
• Team members can then go to www.microbike.org to register and join their
team.
• All team members will then have access to a special team webpage where
they can track the team’s progress.
• All team members will also have their own “My HQ” page that they can use to
send messages to friends and family.
• Head to www.microbike.org to access tools, tips and information that will help
you to have a meaningful and fun experience, creatively promote your ride,
and help microentrepreneurs around the world!
