The study is on finding a solution to unlocking financial opportunities in Togo through the integration of the International Development Association (IDA) private sector window.
IDA as we all know is that part of the World Bank which helps the world’s poorest countries towards reducing poverty, improving living conditions of its people and boosting the economy of these countries.
With 173 shareholders, IDA is said to be one of the largest source of assistance to the 77 poorest countries in the world, out of which 37 are African countries. As one of the largest source of development finance, IDA’s main focus is on the provision of support for health care, education, infrastructures, agriculture, economic & institutional development.
IDA has help millions of people to escape poverty through job creation, access to clean water, provision of schools, roads & electricity. It has also help fund the immunization of over 227 million children, created better water sources to about 64 million people and gave 50 million people access to better health care services.
In cooperation with the Research and Evaluation Division of BRAC, Copenhagen Consensus Center organized roundtable discussions with an aim to figure out smarter solutions to the most problematic issues facing Bangladesh.
Many organisations wonder where to spend their CSR funds, rightfully and meaningfully. Partner with Rotary anywhere. You can be assured of financial stewardship, due diligence of project, regular reportings, media coverage, and free voluntary force of business and professional leaders.
Useful information about extreme poverty in Bangladesh and interesting lessons and insights about how to address it. For example: “Three principles for engaging with extreme poor (a blended approach): ensure sufficient present security to enable people to start planning in the future through direct support for sustainable subsistence; combine present survival with future provision for children; and support safety nets, insurance and social protection to cope with vulnerability, uncertainties, hazards and shocks”. For inclusive market facilitators the question then becomes: how can we use market systems to realise those principles? "Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Challenging the Frontiers of
Poverty Reduction
Targeting the Ultra Poor
(CFPR-TUP)
Presented by: Rozina Haque
Programmw Manager, Ultra Poor Programme (CFPR-TUP)
BRAC
2. www.brac.net
Ultra Poverty Record: Bangladesh
• A country of 153m people of which 17% live
in ultra poverty (BBS 2010)
• Daily per capita calorie intake is equal or
below 1800 kcal (avg.)
• Although microfinance plays a role for
improving livelihoods of the poor, ultra poor
are often bypassed.
• Ultra Poor are largely left out of the
mainstream development programmes.
3. www.brac.net
Background of CFPR-TUP
• BRAC started its journey in 1972
• In 1985, BRAC started Income Generation
for Vulnerable Groups Development
(IGVGD)
• Since the traditional microfinance was not
reaching the extreme poor people, special
interventions were needed to „push down‟
• BRAC has launched the programme called
in short “CFPR-TUP” in 2002.
4. www.brac.net
Goal and Objective
• Assist the ultra poor to improve their
livelihood and bring about positive
changes in achieving economic, social and
asprirational changes
• Assist the ultra poor to access mainstream
development services
5. www.brac.net
Strategies
• Special Investment Programme (SIP)
model for the Specially Targeted Ultra
Poor (STUP)
• Grant Plus credit Support ( GPCS) model
for the Other Targeted Ultra Poor (OTUP)

Beneficiary Selection Process
Three steps selection process
Participatory Rural Appraisal Method
- Social Mapping
- Wealth Ranking
Mini survey through questionnaire
Final selection of eligible households
through verification
14. www.brac.net
Other Targeted Ultra Poor
(OTUP)
• The household owns no more than 30 decimals
of land ( home stead plus arable)
• Could not send children to school after primary
level
• Dependent on seasonal / irregular income
• Unable to make productive or effective use of
NGO services
• could not afford fish, meet or egg in any meal in
past three days before the interview
