Vin is assigned a social impact project at St. Peter's Prep. He researches microloans through Kiva and learns how small loans can help improve economies in places like Quito, Ecuador. Through this project, Vin begins to see how providing capital to local businesses could also help rebuild economies in struggling areas of the US. He and his teammates envision creating a microbank where Prep graduates could invest in entrepreneurs seeking to create sustainable local economies. Leidy Guarin is nominated for the Residence Life Advisor Council's Community Development Award for her efforts to build community at The College Inn. She plans numerous programs and activities to engage residents and bring them together. Leidy participates in intramural sports to involve more residents and cheers on teams. She also frequently interacts with residents outside of planned events, greeting everyone by name. Leidy works to create an inclusive environment and does not limit her efforts to residents of College Inn, recently helping a former resident acquire leg braces to walk at graduation. She is praised for setting the standard for community development.

Charity Water aims to provide clean drinking water to people in developing countries. It discusses that over 1 billion people currently lack access to clean water, and that simple solutions like wells, rainwater catchments, and filters can help millions of people for only $20 per person. The organization has already helped 1 million people gain access to water and aims to do more as the global population increases in coming decades, including working to provide water access to 50% of schools worldwide that currently lack it.

Public libraries do far more than lend books. They are one of the remaining freely accessible civil society institutions and, in their local form, provide a public sphere for civil engagement; from social arena, to providing opportunities for participation. However, austerity measures have cut public library budgets, resulting in limited opening hours, depleted stocks, reduced staff and a growing reliance on volunteers. Other services are fighting, or have succumb to, closure.
While cuts to public libraries affect us all, the consequences are unequal and reflect a widening gulf between rich and poor. Those who are excluded, less able or disenfranchised disproportionately rely on public libraries, not only as a source of information, but as a space of inclusion. To illustrate, this paper draws on ongoing research on the impact of austerity on public libraries. It presents the accounts of homeless people and their everyday encounters with their local library. On one hand the public library was relied on for access to information services necessary for navigating welfare reform, for informal education and books for enjoyment. On the other, it cultivated homeless users’ sense of belonging, providing a space of safety, peace and sanctuary. The paper demonstrates the vital contribution that public libraries make to supporting community well-being and social justice – but only when given proper investment and priority. A stark rendering of what will be lost should statutory public library services continue to be cut, this paper demonstrations how austerity is creating the conditions for widening social divisions.

- 1. Vin’s Legacy: Real Life Comes to Learning at St. Peter’s Prep Social Vin’s Impact assignment We can do Economic it debate The Kiva Quito, Beth Story el, LA
- 2. Treatment 1 • Author: Dom Scibilia • Genre: Fiction, National, Economics and Social Justice • Title: Vin’s Legacy • Logline: Vinny has worked diligently to be contrarian. He is out of dress code and a regular customer in detention. His educational philosophy is getting the best possible grade for the least amount of work. In the junior social ethic course, Vin plays the devil’s advocate even if he takes opposing positions within the same class assignment. He rubs the wrong way teachers and peers alike. The school’s Charitable and Philanthropic efforts frustrate St. Peter’s Prep students, but only Vin verbalizes it. He criticizes community service because it does not really change communities in places like Camden or cities like Quito, Ecuador. All of the school talk about being a man or woman for others means working for social change. Vin just does not buy it.

Treatment 2 • Synopsis: Third year Ethics students have to do a capstone project, and Vin chooses economic justice because in his words “It pisses me off the most.” He scouts around for a team to work with: he joins a team with Tim and Kevin – a higher achiever. He plans on kicking back and let Kevin do his work. Vin follow his plan until Kevin gets on his case – Kevin insists that the eleast Vin can do is locate information about Kiva. It is with Vin’s encounter with Kiva that our story begins. It is far simpler for them to conceive and implement a microlending program for barrios in Quito than to imagine sustainable economies in the USA. As they learn about microeconomic efforts in places like Los Angeles and the need for investment in communities like Bethel, Alaska, through summer immersion trips, they begin to envision initiating microlending cycles in the USA. Prep’s microbank hopes to become like Kiva an online site where Prep graduates, friends and other social impact investors connect with budding entrepreneurs who want to build sustainable local economies. Thus, Prep’s student-operated microbank models for US citizens ways to rebuild the American economy by doing on a small scale social impact investing in the USA.
