We believe in doing what’s right.
A look at our community giving.
Kentucky
In Kentucky, we believe our charitable interactions help make us a better
bank for all our stakeholders – a better bank to work for, do business with
and serve the community. Our efforts remind us that “doing what’s right
for the customer” extends to each and every part of our business, including
strengthening the communities where we live and work.
In 2006, the majority of our giving went to education, civic and community
causes and health and human services efforts. These pages contain
examples of how we leveraged our talents and resources to transform
neighborhoods, teach people how to stay out of debt and save for their
futures, and coordinate hundreds of volunteers for many different and
important causes.
We believe there is strength in numbers.
Year after year, employees’ donations to the United Way serve as a
reminder of their generosity to the community. We are proud to support
their belief in giving back by matching their personal donations with a
corporate gift. In Kentucky, our contribution totaled $521,000.

Believing, Leading, Serving –
A Message From Our President
At National City, we believe “giving back” is essential to the economic vitality and growth
of the communities where we live and work. From providing professional role models to
our future work force to “doing what’s right for our customers” by investing in causes they
support, contributing time, talent and resources to our communities is smart business. More
importantly, it is the right thing to do.
In Kentucky, we believe “giving back” is a long-term investment, worthy of careful
consideration like any business decision, but delivered with heart, hope and humility. Our
community giving strategy strives to create vibrant communities where residents and business
owners benefit. And, we look to collaborate with others to make Kentucky a better place to
live and work.
Last year, our focus on diversity led to supporting Children at Hope. This program gives
underprivileged children access to the arts, including sending more than 800 students in
primarily Hispanic communities to an outdoor musical production.
Supporting economic development in Kentucky, National City participated in a multistate
effort, Money $mart Week, to support and promote financial education. During the event,
National City provided an America Saves presentation for the clients of the Southern Indiana
Asset Building Coalition and its Kentucky partners.
In addition, we are particularly proud of the leadership role National City continues to take
in rebuilding and revitalizing our cities and towns and educating children in Kentucky’s great
cities. Our civic commitments demonstrate our role as a catalyst for change.
This is only the beginning of what we can do in Kentucky to make a difference.
We believe we can do more. We know we will.

We believe
Giving to health causes and helping neighbors access the support
they need is the right thing to do. Healthy neighbors are employees
who can perform at work, children who can excel at school and
citizens who can start each day with hope and optimism. Here is a
sampling of our contributions to health and human services efforts:
Dare to Care Kids Café and Care Fair
Year-round, the Dare to Care Kids Café at the Shawnee Boys and
Girls Club provides aftercare and hot dinners to over 500 needy
students monthly. National City donates to the café and partly
sponsored The Care Fair, a new family-friendly event raising
awareness for local hunger efforts.
Blessings in a Backpack
Through this program, elementary students in free-lunch programs
receive a backpack filled with staple foods on a weekly basis to
ensure nutritional needs are met at home. Our employee volunteers
help stuff the backpacks.
National City also made donations to support the following:
•	Home of the Innocents
•	YMCA of Greater Louisville
•	Gilda’s Club
Breast Cancer Awareness
Our corporate stance against breast cancer combined with
employees’ dedication resulted in increased awareness and
research through the following activities:
•	Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – 50 employees walked
and ran to raise $26,000 for breast cancer research through the
American Cancer Society.
•	We created a unique 20-foot pink aluminum ribbon that stood in the
National City Tower Plaza throughout October to raise awareness.
•	In Jefferson County, a National City gift to the American Cancer
Society’s Memorial Grove of Living Trees planted trees in honor of
a loved one affected by the disease.
“National City has had a long-standing partnership with the
YMCA so we were pleased to give to their campaign to
develop a facility adjacent to Park Duvalle – a housing
development where National City has played a critical role.”
Charles P. Denny, President and CEO

begin with healthy neighborhoods.healthy futures
We believe hope sounds like
power tools.
We believe community revitalization is more than bricks and mortar,
it’s a commitment to economic vitality, safe places to live and
providing tools to help residents invest and build equity. Here are
examples of how National City invested in communities in 2006:
Ignite Louisville
Our support for Ignite Louisville helps train young professionals
with diverse backgrounds and interests for community leadership. To
date, 171 emerging leaders have graduated from the program while
helping 12 community projects move forward.
Our employees participate in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer walk.
Hispanic Task Force
The Hispanic Task Force was created to drive recruitment and
business goals by understanding and embracing this emerging
market. The task force includes community activities, sponsorships
and specific hiring goals to increase Hispanic customer relationships.
National City provides support and employee volunteers.
Contributions were also made to:
•	20th Century Parks Program – a significant National City donation
helped create the largest urban park system in the country.
•	Boy Scouts of America/ Girl Scouts of America – capital campaign
support toward a new Boy and Girl Scout facility.
We believe one caring person
can change a child’s life.
Providing opportunities to enhance and promote access to higher
education is a priority for our giving in Kentucky. We believe
investments in education yield great rewards for individuals and the
entire community. Here are a few examples of how National City
supported education in 2006:
Every1Reads
National City continues to be the largest corporate supporter of
the Jefferson County Public Schools reading program, Every1Reads.
With an investment of financial support and 80 volunteer and
retiree tutors at several schools, Every1Reads is Kentucky’s most
significant volunteer/community effort.
National City also presented scholarships and funding through
the following:
•	The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS)
Book and Materials Fund
•	The National City Business Scholars Program
•	The Sweet 16 Scholars Program
National City employees volunteer hundreds of hours toward
helping people in our communities understand basic financial
services and learn ways they can build wealth for themselves and
their families. Here are a few examples of our efforts:
Money $mart Week in Indiana
Partnering with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and
Money $mart Week in Indiana for a multistate effort to increase
financial education, National City offered an America Saves
presentation for clients of the Southern Indiana Asset Building
Coalition and its partners.
Get Smart About Credit Day
National City employees took part in this national initiative, along
with the American Bankers Association and U.S. Treasury Official
Matt Josephs, to provide students at New Albany High School
with information about becoming creditworthy and managing
personal debt.
Lincoln Foundation – Parental Institute
National City volunteers teach financial education to parents
whose children are participating in the Whitney M. Young Scholars
program. These monthly parental meetings help a very diverse
group of students and their families achieve academic success and
financial stability.
We support the power of education by tutoring Every1Reads students.
The National City Community Development Corporation (CDC)
and our full commitment to the principles of the Community
Reinvestment Act (CRA) are two ways of leveraging our resources
to make distinct and positive changes in neighborhoods across our
footprint. The CRA helps National City meet specific community
needs like affordable housing loans and affordable checking
accounts. Our CDC provides seed investments to spark community
growth through property development and other initiatives. The
following examples had a great impact in Kentucky:
Cathedral Commons
The $7.8 million renovation project utilizes tax credits plus a
National City CDC investment of $5.4 million. The project will
create 40 affordable rental units utilizing Low Income Housing Tax
Credits and have street-level commercial and retail space.
St. Columba Senior Housing
The renovation of this Catholic school involves a National City CDC
investment of $7.7 million. It will create 75 affordable housing units
for senior citizens.

We believe
We believe art inspires innovation.
Ensuring high caliber arts and cultural activities for our residents
is part of our commitment to making life more rewarding. Beauty,
talent and innovation grow from natural ability, but it is our
responsibility to support growth, sustainability and accessibility to
the arts to ensure the entire community benefits. The following
summary of our efforts demonstrates our commitment to arts
and culture in our region:
Actors Theatre – Playwriting in the Schools
This hands-on program helped 458 Jefferson County middle and high
school students learn playwriting and performance in a year-round
program geared toward young adult issues. Students are mentored
by in-residence playwrights, and short pieces are performed at the
Humana Festival of New American Plays in the spring.
Adelante Latin Jazz Festival
National City sponsored this weeklong Latin music festival featuring
nationally known Latin talent to raise funds and awareness for a
new initiative called Adelante Hispanic Achievers, a program aimed
at middle schoolers.
“National City is an important partner in an exciting urban
revitalization project – transforming a former housing
project into a vibrant mixed-income neighborhood east of
downtown. Liberty Green is creating a place of opportunity
out of a former pocket of poverty.”
Jerry Abramson, Mayor of Louisville
We promote diversity in the arts through the Adelante Latin Jazz Festival.
We believe a picture says a
thousand words.
We are grateful to the employees who give generously of their
time to make our communities better places to live and work.
Corporate-wide in 2006, employees contributed approximately
445,375 hours to complement corporate giving and support
causes close to their own hearts. We celebrate all who believe
in making a difference, one person at a time. Some of these
volunteers are pictured here. The other photographs paint a
picture of our community giving efforts in Kentucky.
We show our community support by:
• Providing scholarships to Sweet 16 scholar-athletes and National City Business Scholars
• Offering a monthly meeting place for the Iroquois Area Business Association.
National City employees and Chuck Denny show support for:
• The Dare to Care Fair
• Blessings in a Backpack
• Diversity efforts through the National City Task Force
Contribution Guidelines
To be eligible for support, local organizations and institutions must operate for
public purposes and qualify as nonprofit and tax-exempt under the regulations
of the United States Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3). Contributions are
normally made to organizations in the education, arts and culture, civic affairs
and human services fields.
Requests from qualified regional, statewide or national associations should be

Believing, Leading, Serving – A Message From Our President At National City, we believe “giving back” is essential to the economic vitality and growth of the communities where we live and work. From providing professional role models to our future work force to “doing what’s right for our customers” by investing in causes they support, contributing time, talent and resources to our communities is smart business. More importantly, it is the right thing to do. In Kentucky, we believe “giving back” is a long-term investment, worthy of careful consideration like any business decision, but delivered with heart, hope and humility. Our community giving strategy strives to create vibrant communities where residents and business owners benefit. And, we look to collaborate with others to make Kentucky a better place to live and work. Last year, our focus on diversity led to supporting Children at Hope. This program gives underprivileged children access to the arts, including sending more than 800 students in primarily Hispanic communities to an outdoor musical production. Supporting economic development in Kentucky, National City participated in a multistate effort, Money $mart Week, to support and promote financial education. During the event, National City provided an America Saves presentation for the clients of the Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition and its Kentucky partners. In addition, we are particularly proud of the leadership role National City continues to take in rebuilding and revitalizing our cities and towns and educating children in Kentucky’s great cities. Our civic commitments demonstrate our role as a catalyst for change. This is only the beginning of what we can do in Kentucky to make a difference. We believe we can do more. We know we will. • 4. We believe Giving to health causes and helping neighbors access the support they need is the right thing to do. Healthy neighbors are employees who can perform at work, children who can excel at school and citizens who can start each day with hope and optimism. Here is a sampling of our contributions to health and human services efforts: Dare to Care Kids Café and Care Fair Year-round, the Dare to Care Kids Café at the Shawnee Boys and Girls Club provides aftercare and hot dinners to over 500 needy students monthly. National City donates to the café and partly sponsored The Care Fair, a new family-friendly event raising awareness for local hunger efforts. Blessings in a Backpack Through this program, elementary students in free-lunch programs receive a backpack filled with staple foods on a weekly basis to ensure nutritional needs are met at home. Our employee volunteers help stuff the backpacks. National City also made donations to support the following: • Home of the Innocents • YMCA of Greater Louisville • Gilda’s Club Breast Cancer Awareness Our corporate stance against breast cancer combined with employees’ dedication resulted in increased awareness and research through the following activities: • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – 50 employees walked and ran to raise $26,000 for breast cancer research through the American Cancer Society. • We created a unique 20-foot pink aluminum ribbon that stood in the National City Tower Plaza throughout October to raise awareness. • In Jefferson County, a National City gift to the American Cancer Society’s Memorial Grove of Living Trees planted trees in honor of a loved one affected by the disease. “National City has had a long-standing partnership with the YMCA so we were pleased to give to their campaign to develop a facility adjacent to Park Duvalle – a housing development where National City has played a critical role.” Charles P. Denny, President and CEO National City, Kentucky Banking begin with healthy neighborhoods.healthy futures We believe hope sounds like power tools. We believe community revitalization is more than bricks and mortar, it’s a commitment to economic vitality, safe places to live and providing tools to help residents invest and build equity. Here are examples of how National City invested in communities in 2006: Ignite Louisville Our support for Ignite Louisville helps train young professionals with diverse backgrounds and interests for community leadership. To date, 171 emerging leaders have graduated from the program while helping 12 community projects move forward. We believe one caring person can change a child’s life. Providing opportunities to enhance and promote access to higher education is a priority for our giving in Kentucky. We believe investments in education yield great rewards for individuals and the entire community. Here are a few examples of how National City supported education in 2006: Every1Reads National City continues to be the largest corporate supporter of the Jefferson County Public Schools reading program, Every1Reads. We support the power of education by tutoring Every1Reads students.
  • 6. The National City Community Development Corporation (CDC) and our full commitment to the principles of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) are two ways of leveraging our resources to make distinct and positive changes in neighborhoods across our footprint. The CRA helps National City meet specific community needs like affordable housing loans and affordable checking accounts. Our CDC provides seed investments to spark community growth through property development and other initiatives. The following examples had a great impact in Kentucky: Cathedral Commons The $7.8 million renovation project utilizes tax credits plus a National City CDC investment of $5.4 million. The project will create 40 affordable rental units utilizing Low Income Housing Tax Credits and have street-level commercial and retail space. St. Columba Senior Housing The renovation of this Catholic school involves a National City CDC investment of $7.7 million. It will create 75 affordable housing units for senior citizens. can change a life.a few nails and a little drywall We believe We believe art inspires innovation. Ensuring high caliber arts and cultural activities for our residents is part of our commitment to making life more rewarding. Beauty, talent and innovation grow from natural ability, but it is our responsibility to support growth, sustainability and accessibility to the arts to ensure the entire community benefits. The following summary of our efforts demonstrates our commitment to arts and culture in our region: Actors Theatre – Playwriting in the Schools This hands-on program helped 458 Jefferson County middle and high school students learn playwriting and performance in a year-round program geared toward young adult issues. Students are mentored by in-residence playwrights, and short pieces are performed at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in the spring. Adelante Latin Jazz Festival National City sponsored this weeklong Latin music festival featuring nationally known Latin talent to raise funds and awareness for a new initiative called Adelante Hispanic Achievers, a program aimed at middle schoolers. “National City is an important partner in an exciting urban revitalization project – transforming a former housing project into a vibrant mixed-income neighborhood east of downtown. Liberty Green is creating a place of opportunity out of a former pocket of poverty.” Jerry Abramson, Mayor of Louisville We promote diversity in the arts through the Adelante Latin Jazz Festival.
