CINEMATOGRAPHY
High angles is one of the most significant cinematography elements used in my
film, this is an effective angle because it makes my protagonist look small and
almost like someone is watching over her. The use of the high angle makes the
audience perceive the character as a small intimated girl. Also the high angles
with a pan movement gives the impression that someone is watching and
following her wish makes the audience be on edge therefore creating suspense.
As you can see from the example below that my vision has been influenced by
Wan’s style as he likes to create suspense in the same way just like I have.
High Angle
Close up
Close ups is another significant cinematography element that I have used within my
film. The most effective close up was of Millie's face were we could see that one of
her eye was black. By having this close-up it makes the audience focus on her eyes
and this is when we realise that something bad is going to happen due to the drastic
change in the character. The use of close-up angle makes the audience perceive
the character in a different light. This element was influenced by Wan has although
his distinctive style is to use Wide angles he also uses close-ups in order to keep
the viewers attention, therefore with this in mind it shows that I have been
influenced by Wan’s style.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Costume
• Within my own short film I had the protagonist wear her own ‘ever day’
clothes in order to create verisimilitude and also to show that the protagonist
is an everyday person that goes through some creepy issues and
challenges as anyone else.
• The costumes in Dead silence (2007) create verisimilitude as they reflect
the everyday era for each individual scenes.
Location
• Above are examples of locations within my short film. I wanted to use
locations that create verisimilitude and show the ‘everyday’. I also used
outdoor locations that present the theme of fear. I wanted to show tight and
dark spaces, showing theme of claustrophobia.
• Locations in James Wan films similarly show the theme of fear and show off
the cinematography and use of wide angle lenses. It shows the expanses of
loneliness and I therefore wanted to use wide angle to show the vastness of
fear and reflect Wan’s style.
Lighting
One of the most effective ways to make an audience feel fear and be
scared is by having dull and dark lighting. By having this type of lighting
it helps create tension in an effective manner as it allows objects and
characters to be not seen clearly within a frame, allowing the audience
to focus more on the screen waiting for the unexpected turnover. This
aspect was influenced from Wans work, as one of his distinctive styles
is to use low key lighting in order to create a sinister environment.
EDITING
My short film includes the use of jump cuts and parallel
editing. I decided upon these editing techniques due to
analysing Wan’s films in my creative investigation. I
decided to be influenced by these techniques and embed
them into my own work, this also makes the film
conventional due to these techniques.
The reason that jump cuts work effectively in my short film
is because these come under the horror genre as it helps
crease suspense and also goes with how the audience will
react throughout the film. This is a clear link to the style of
Wan’s films because of how it links to film noir at some
points, therefor I think I found that this functioned very well
because in that way I told the audience a clear narrative
and also ibn a chronological order which also mirrors the
ideas that have learnt from my foundation portfolio.
SOUND
Within my film there isn’t much dialogue which allowed my
diegetic sounds to be heard clearly such as heavy
breathing, footsteps, creaky floorboard and heartbeat, it
was important that these sounds were heard significantly
because it helps create an everyday life feeling for the
audience. With this in mind it helps link the main aims for
my film as I want my audience to be engaged with the
narrative as well as the characters I the film and feel the
same emotions.
I decided to include a soundtrack at the beginning of my
short film, in order to put the audience in the characters
shoes and also so that the audience could connect with the
characters.
