 Flashbacks
Mirrors are commonly used in thriller films the
 portray ones inner self.

This could be used to show darkness in a
 character.

  He is talking in the
  mirror and seeing the
  reflection of his inner
  self (The Goblin)
Low lighting is often used with shadows and
the use of shadows can create darkness
within beings and add more tension to the
   scene

The boys shadow
moves without
himself moving
connoting that there
is something else
inside him.
Flashbacks are used as a sense of
  disorientation.
Flashbacks are a key convention of thrillers as
they give an insight of a characters past to
  the audience.
A flashback is showing
what the character is
remembering that
happened before which
is effecting him now.
 Obstructive editing is frequently used in
thriller films to accentuate the feeling of
    suspense and tension
 Used to create disorientation of time and
    space, using montage editing
